Why are the Altmer frowned upon?

  • I understand the first impression of an Altmer; Haughty, proud, hot-headed. This much, I understand. But why not look past that first impression? The Altmer are a proud people because they have reason to be proud. The Altmer heritage is deeply rooted and they are among, if not the most powerful mages on Nirn. I am aware of their lack of Magick resistance, and their poor ability in straightforward melee combat. However, the Altmer easily make up for it with their prowess in the Arcane arts.

So, I'm unsure if it is the haughty pride or the lack of Magical resistances (or even the new addition of yellow eyes to their persona) but the Altmer seem greatly overlooked. Could I have a reason as to why you like or dislike them?

Played altmer only when i wanted to be a pure mage. Altmers have so many weaknesses, In Morrowind Altmer weaknesses were easier to replace with enchantments, bcuz u can choose the amount how much the enchantment protects u from certain effects. But yeah, ...  more

@ Steven - Well, according to UESP (I just checked) the Altmer have retained their +50 magicka bonus. Now, this may be speculation, but I have to imagine that someone updating these on UESP has played or has checked this with leaked *shudders* versions of...  more

@tacobanana- supposedly they're still going to have +50 magic, at least according to some rumors. but i seriously doubt that because todd howard expressly stated that all races would have the same starting magic, endurance, and health. however, i've also ...  more

@ Steven - Yes, they are rumored to not have the racial weaknesses they have had in previous games, just slightly less benefits. I have not been able to confirm this because I don't believe in looking at the spoilers. *shudders*

I like the Altmer. They may be snobs, but they are highly sophisticated.  The elemental weaknesses in previous games were kind of annoying at low levels, but there are ways to get around those eventually. In Skyrim they don't even have that weakness. more

I'm thinking of being Altmer.  I think they get a bad rap because they're sort of "high society" folk.  And typically they're not all muscular and beefy, as was popularized by Conan.

@ Mason - I'm glad you look forward to the Atlmer! I'm sorry you viewed their weaknesses as shortcomings in the previous games, but Bethesda seems to have done a bit of an overhaul on them and I can't wait to see the new changes for myself!
