Launch Week News Update #2

  • Sorry I'm running really late with this today.. Trying to fight off a bit of a cold before Skyrim is released.

The first update almost made it to yesterdays news.  For all of you who have Steam accounts you might want to look into changing those passwords and watching any linked credit cards for charges you didn't make.  It seems that either early Monday or late Sunday night the Valve forum site was hacked.  And has still yet to return to operation.  This breach was originally reported (as best I can determine) by Joystiq.com, head over there to read the full story.

Next up in our update is that several countries around the world have already started selling the game retail.  This was first announced from the Netherlands but as I understand it, several other countries have now followed suit and began letting folks get their hands on the game early.  Please note that this does not let them yet play the game as all 3 version still have protection built in that prevent early activation.   The first article on this topic I was able to locate was from the guys over at GotGame.Com.

For those of you getting Skyrim via Steam on the PC this next story should be no shocker to you.  Steam began pre-loading the game last night at about 10pm EST (4am GMT).  The Pre-Load is not automatic, you do have to click the Pre-Load button in your Steam client.  After poking around at the files that downloaded I learned a few things.  First up, this isn't the full game (yet), there are no game engine files downloaded as yet and most of the Bink files for the intro video are missing.  Also, all of the files that have been downloaded are highly encrypted, even the dot.net and DirectX 10 SDK's that ship with the game are encrypted, so not much chance of playing them yet.  Product-Reviews did a short write up on Steam's PC pre-load and go live time contingency plance, you can read that HERE if you are so inclined.

And Lastly we have an article from Wired.com.  On Monday Todd Howard was interviewed via phone by Wired.com's Jason Schreier.  During this interview Todd revealed that Skyrim will have an INFINITE number of quests!  It seems that the Radiant Story system is able to procedurally generate an infinite number of quests long after all the scripted quests have been completed.  That article can be found HERE for those interested.

Thats my news update for today, if anyone had already covered these topics elsewhere I apologies for not giving you credit here.  As tomorrow (10 Nov 11) is the date which all of the Skyrim "Reviews" will be released I will not be posting a news update.  I will however caution everyone that doesn't want to read "Spoilers" against reading these Reviews as they almost always include information you will not want to hear.  Have a great day, if this was helpful and informative for you, be sure to click the Like button.. I'm going back to bed cause colds suck when there are games to be played.

I hope I don't have to change my steam password cuz I already had to change my bioware account password after they where hacked.

I'm not gonna be needing those reviews too, I'm already sure Skyrims gonna own everything right now.

Actually Nakia its protection against early release.  The game files that are downloaded are the bulk of the game, when the release happens the steam client gets the decryption key and opens the files up and downloads the last 2 or 3 files needed to run t...  more

Thank you for the update, Ssarr.  I do have a Steam account  but no credit card linked to it.  I find it interesting that Steam released a 'game' that isn't complete and can't be played.  I guess it is a teaser.  I do not pay much attention to 'profession...  more

That infinite quests thing has me really excited. The Thieve's Guild is a whole lot more fun when you actually NEED to steal things. That's not even taking into account the Dark Brotherhood... :D
