One month on the new site

  • Today marks the one month anniversary of when I first signed up for a Ning account and started to build this site. We've not been operating for quite a month yet - there was a few days of figuring things out, then a brief period of 'beta testing' before the site went live on October 24th.

But this is the month anniversary since 'sign up'. I know this because this is the point at which the site starts to cost money - previously we have been on a one month free trial. And the payment was taken today....yikes!

It's still a bit unclear whether this site is going to make it in the longer term. Site activity continues to bump along at a fairly moribund level - although, paradoxically, the numbers of people coming to the site is still high. That's a cause for concern, because lots of non-contributing visitors suggests an attitude of 'I want to read other people's content' that doesn't really work on a social site.

So we'll have to see how things go. If levels of activity in things like Groups, Forums and Blogs picks up then we should be fine. I've recently opened up Forums to everyone so that provides more opportunities for contributing, but the Groups have - in the most part - really slowed down this week. And we're getting very little added to the Photos, Videos and Q&A, as compared to pre-release.

Anyway, we are definitely here for another month at least! Beyond that? Well, a decision will need to be made. There'll definitely be a further slowdown over Christmas and New Year, so that's something to bear in mind. And the domain name is due for renewal in January anyway, so that will something else to consider.

So, we will see what we will see

Don't worry this was expected during the first month after launch. They'll come back. We've noticed less posting but a huge influx of new visitors to the Skyrim Guild website since launch. We're even paying people to post guides/articles on Skyrim now.

I check every day, sometimes I respond, I actually only post on Facebook about once a week, so you are more popular.
Posts will increase once people have got over the euphoria of the release, and want to psot their ideas and what has happened to them.

I still ckeck on here daily. I mainly go to Q&A. I'll ask some Q and tab in some A. Been a little turned off by the "journels" in the main blog section. I think one guy posted like 4-5 in a row. I haven't blogged much. Most of my thoughts are directed...  more

Paul, I also feel that the type of contributor that this blog attracts is reluctant to post too much because it may be considered spoilers or simply content that is not for discussion, ie, OMG, did you see this or that?
I think many are waiting to g...  more

Paul, my life is crazy busy for the next two weeks, and when I have free time, I am playing, not posting.  After my life returns to something approaching normal, I intend to be back to my favorite groups and your blogs.  I am particularly eager to partici...  more

I wouldn't worry about it too much, Paul. People are naturally going to be on a lot less because of Skyrim being out. And if you live in the USA, like me, Thanksgiving is coming up so that's another reason for some of us to be on a lot less. I am having a...  more

I've dropped in only a bit, and it was only to read, or check the Q&A - but most of my free time has been playing.  Thanksgiving Holiday is coming up in the US, after that I think the site activity will start to pick up.  I know I'll be here more freq...  more

Skyrim is out, of course the site will have slowed down. Give it time, it will pick up again. Remember that the Creation Kit hasn't been released yet, once that is out the Workshop will get more activity I think.
