The Adventures of San-daro; Chapter 7

  • In this part of our ESO Beginners Guide we are going to have a quick look at ‘Ultimates’, what they are and how to use them in gameplay.

Let’s start with some of the basics

    • Ultimates start to become available when your class skills reach Level 12 - although Armor Ultimates don’t become available until you hit Level 22, and Weapon skills until you’re all the way to Level 50.

    • You have a dedicated slot on your skill bar for Ultimate that can only be used for ultimate skills, so you don’t lose anything (apart from a skill point) by picking an ultimate to use.

    • You can only have one Ultimate active at a time (until you open up a second skill bar at Level 15, when you can choose a second one).

    • When you fire off the Ultimate it will totally drain your Ultimate meter, and it will need to gradually replenish. You can’t spam Ultimates – so keep them for the occasion when you really need it!

    • Just like other skills, you can opt to morph your Ultimate skills once you’ve used them for a while

    • Ultimate skills do not use stamina or Magicka, but a special resource called (surprise, surprise) ‘Ultimate’, which replenishes through combat attacks and blocking.

San-daro needs a spinning attack because she is sleek and deadly

So how do you go about choosing an ‘ultimate’?

Well, the first thing to say is that you’re simply wasting skill points if you pick multiple ultimate skills. Research the class skills for your class, and choose ahead of time. It won’t be long before your skills reach Level 12!

Pick an ultimate that synergises with your playstyle. The available Ultimates for your chosen skill be have a variety of effects – some are geared towards dealing damage, others provide healing, still others buff you in some way. Think carefully about what you want to achieve with your Ultimates!

This one rides Senche into the sunset because this one can...

Many ESO players like their Ultimate to be a ‘get out of jail card’ – a devastating attack that you can pull out when taking a beating! It feels great to turn the tide of battle by triggering your ultimate.

There is one Ultimate that is different to all the others – and that’s the Feral Guardian Ultimate in the Warden Animal Companion Skill tree. Why? Because, uniquely, it is not a one-shot effect. Summon the Feral Guardian and you have a loyal grizzly bear to fight by your side – and not just for a few seconds, but until it (or you) get killed. Since the bear is pretty tough, you’ll invariably fill up your Ultimate meter by the time it gets killed – meaning you can have a bear acting as your meat shield virtually 100% of the time. Sweet!

In the case of San-daro, who (in case you forgot) is a Nightblade sneaky assassin, my thinking was that I needed to use my first Ultimate skill to boost survivability. Due to lack of obvious healing skills, Nightblades are notoriously squishy.

So I went for the Soul Shred Ultimate from the Siphoning skill line. As soon as it was available, I morphed to Soul Tether – a more powerful version which not only stuns enemies, but also leeches a decent amount of health from them over time.

The first choice of Ultimate for a sneaky, squishy Nightblade

More than a few times, the tide of a particular tough boss fight was turned by firing off Soul Tether – stunning the enemies, leeching their health, whilst also raining down blows upon them. Cool!

So that’s just a quickie guide to Ultimates. It’s definitely worth investing a skill point pretty much as soon as you are able to do so!

I'm trying out a warden at the moment. I like the sound of the bear but..... Why couldn't it be a wolf instead?

Nice guide! Ultimates are really useful and very cool, IMO. One nitpick, though: Armors have normal skills, but not Ultimates. For example, Rahzam had the Immovable Heavy Armor skill on his main bar, along with the Shadow Ultimate.

Thanks Tenebrous - you're absolutely correct. Somehow, I'd glanced at arbor skills and 'assumed' that the single non-passive skill for each arbor type was an ultimate - whereas it is actually an active skill!

Now I need to investigate...  more

Nice one Paul!  My favourite Ultimate at the moment is the Healing Thicket morph of Secluded Grove. I've built my Warden as a healer and am so impressed by their healing skill. That ultimate in particular is almost spamable and its heal over time eff...  more
