The Weekend Roundtable: Changing races?

  • I would imagine that, by this point, you've all pretty well settled on the race of your starting character in Skyrim.

Of course some of you probably decided that almost a year ago when we first heard that there was going to be an Elder Scrolls 5. Then there'll be those who always play exactly the same race. You played a Dunmer in Morrowind, carried that over into Oblivion and you couldn't imagine venturing out into the land of Skyrim without your beloved Dunmer...

But I wonder if there are those who have changed their mind.

Perhaps you always started with an Imperial before, but because Skyrim is set in the land of the Nords, you feel somehow that it wouldn't be quite right to not be a Nord.

Or maybe you have read up on all the various races - perhaps even via the Races series on the old blog - and thought 'You know what, I never considered playing a Bosmer before, but now that i know their incredible lore background, I'm going to make a Wood Elf'.

Then there is the visual aspect. Were you one those people who felt a bit..well.. embarrassed to play as a goofy looking Khajiit, even though you really wanted the stealthy traits. But now you've seen how badass they look in Skyrim you're thinking of rolling up your long-desired Khajiit.

So this Weekend Roundtable, the last before we get our hands on the game, is about Races. But not merely the race we plan to play - but why. And I am particularly interested to hear from people who have changed their thoughts about what they plan to start with in Skyrim.

To complement this topic We have another race poll. Yes, we've had this poll before, but now that the game is only a week away, it will interested to see if the popularity of some races is changing since we did this poll a few months ago.

So, vote in the poll and give your comments below...

When I originally played oblivion I chose Argonian, because it looked cool. I didn't get far. Then I read through all the stats in the instruction manual and chose a Khajiit w/ abilites I later found useless. Most recently I've used a Female Breton to for...  more

I have always played an Imperial in the past, but I'm considering playing a Nord for the first time in Skyrim.

Woo hoo, Redguards are going to be the least played. It's like how Altmer were in the past! Well, I've stuck with Redguards since I've started playing Elder Scrolls and that's what I play as 80 percent of the time (Argonian and Dunmer take up the other 20 percent).

I am switching from Dunmer to Orc this time. I was inspired by this site to flesh out my character's backstory more, and, having always been a bit of an outsider myself, feel like Orsimer is the way to go. I also want to experiment with two-handed weapons...  more

In Morrowind i played as a Bosmer, same in Oblivion, but in skyrim, I think I'm going to go Dunmer. The thing that changed my mind is in Morrowind all the dark elf models had red eyes, scars and tattoos.  I didn't want that on my character because it look...  more
