WEEKLY POLL Which do you think is the best fantasy world in gaming or literature?

  • As I mentioned in a thread in our forums last week, this weeks poll takes a slightly different slant - and moves away from being strictly about Elder Scrolls.

Since we have the 'Cross Worlds' Event going on in the Character Build Group, which is all about creating builds inspired by non-Elder Scrolls Lore, I thought it would be fun to look at the question:

Which is your favourite fantasy world?

With the help of the thread, I've chosen a bunch of what I think should be the main contenders. Of course, I couldn't include them all of course, so we have the usual 'Another one not mentioned' option. But for the love of Talos, don't click this option and then clear off. All that does it leave us wondering 'what did they mean?'. If you click that option, TELL US which one you meant in the comments below...

I look forward to seeing how this poll pans out.

I love the world of Dark Souls. I love the land shown to us in-game, Lordran, and how its so perfectly designed and spaced, and I love what I know of the land around it, and the lore that you can piece together.

My favorite is by far Tamriel. Alagaësia is close behind though

I love you Tamriel, but I think Thedas might take the cake for originality and the feeling of realism from the strife and ideals.

I just realized that I missed Dragonlance on the list. I always had fun DMing Dragonlance games.

To Sean, I agree that Star Wars and Mass Effect are more Scifi than fantasy, but why did you call out Discworld? I mean, it's satire of practically all of the fantasty tropes out there, not scifi.

That may be Archcanon, but in terms of setting fantasy is typically used to describe swords and magic worlds and all the permutations of them, not the more abstract settings and certainly not sci fi, that gets its own word.

To answer Sean's question below, fantasy as a genre encompasses much more than most people assume. It is made up by everything "fantastical", and this includes science fiction.

It looks like Tamriel is winning. I went with Forgotten Realms, but that's because I have been into RPGs since before the Elder Scrolls started. However, I will give it this - Tamriel is definitely the most thoroughly constructed of those above (though Mid...  more
