'My compliments to the Chef!' Food in Skyrim

  • We seen loads of previews of Skyrim that talk about killing wolves, mooching around Riverwood and charging off to Bleak Falls Barrow. I must have read dozens! I came upon a slightly different take on Skyrim via a site called KillScreenDaily.

This journalist focused on what he could eat in Skyrim. Yes you read that right. He used his allotted time to see what he could learn about the various types of edible content in the game.

You can read the article via this link, but to summarise here's a list of what he found.

    • butterfly
    • salmon
    • bees
    • dragonflies
    • torchbug
    • beef
    • chicken breast
    • venison
    • potato
    • wheat
    • cabbage
    • eider cheese wedge
    • grilled leeks
    • horker loaf
    • sweet roll
    • cooked salmon steak
    • grapes
    • leg of goat

This got me thinking. How much time are we going to take with food in Skyrim?

Will you just grab any old food and stuff it down - for the modest health boost. Will you look to cook the food so that raw salmon becomes grilled salmon, for example, and confers better benefits.

Or maybe you'll go down the whole role playing route and carefully select ingredients with which to prefer tasty and balanced meals, making sure to eat regularly. We know there's no 'hardcore' mode - at least without mods - but that doesn't stop us from immersing ourselves in a full roleplaying experience.

Let's talk about food in Skyrim...

I am definitely going to be spending time with the cooking system in Skyrim. I used to sit down in the taverns in Oblivion around meal time, pull out some food from my pack, and dig in. It required significant use of my imagination, as eating in Oblivion ...  more

Definitely, I'll learn to cook and other crafting skills to get all the perks and then travel throught Skyrim main quest.
In Oblivion I don't eat anything at all because the ingredients seem poor in effects, but that will change in Skyrim .

I usually don't worry about food very much until I have played the game several times.  I just might change my mind in Skyrim since cooking is available from the start.  Bugs?  Well, we had rat meat in Oblivion.  So why not?  In Oblivion I use Real hunger...  more

I wonder if you could make something along the lines of steak tartare. No cooking needed!
