Group Spotlight #2: Girl Gamers

  • This week we are featuring Girl Gamers, and original group pioneer Imeera kicks off by telling us a bit of background about the group

In the early days of The Skyrim Blog there were many girl gamers out there, but we were being swamped my our many male gamer friends on the site and, bar a few, I never go to know any of them. I knew there were more out there but there was no way of knowing who. So the idea of creating a group for girl gamers like myself came to me and I realised that this was a chance to make some girl gamer friends and get to know like minded ladies! So I asked Paul and he created the group. I was overjoyed and exited wondering who I was going to meet. This was before Skyrim had even been released and in the end many girl gamers joined  and it ended up becoming more than I dreamed. The group was buzzing with excitement about Skyrim, full of friendly words about life and created thought provoking discussions about gaming and the gaming world.

After the release of Skyrim the group became quieter, people were playing Skyrim and discussions were focused on Skyrim itself but after a while activity halted bar for a few. The amazing women I once had the pleasure of chatting to were now busy with their daily lives and it became apparent that many who had joined the group had never joined in with discussions.  In the end it was simply the lovely Asverze and the zealous Argonian Fangirl that was keeping the group alive.

It became apparent that I must do something for the group to create an active group again where girl gamers could talk and meet like-minded women as it was more than a year ago or let it fizzle out. So I set out for advice and gained useful infomation and ideas. I also gained an invaluable source of ideas and enthusiasm in the form of a co-host; Argonian Fangirl.

Picking up the story, recently added host Argonian Fangirl tells us more

As, some, of you may know Imeera has been a long standing member of the Skyrim Blog and the original host of the Girl Gamers group! I, however, have not been here as long as Imeera, but I have lurked here for a long time as a visitor, checking out most of the groups, including the Girl Gamers group!

The Girl Gamers group has always interested me as it is, as the name suggests, a place only for girl gamers. I find that it is a unique thing, because it is not often that you come across a site with a place only for girls! Sadly, the group has started to fall asleep lately, but the hosts, Imeera and I, are doing our best to wake it up again. Imeera has started a competition (which can be found here) and it is soon to be followed up by an idea of my own! But we need your help girls! We need girls who are willing to participate in discussions and create a few of your own.

Now there are more girls joining the Girl Gamer group and it is becoming lively once more. I hope that this continues and the Girl Gamers group becomes a hub of gaming chat for girl gamers. This group was never about segregation it is simply somewhere girl gamers can meet other girl gamers without interfearing with the rest of the site and the groups future is looking bright.

Check out Girl Gamers. There's a ton of new stuff going on there. Join up if you are a girl and join in the chat over there. And a big thank you to Imeera and Argonian Fangirl, Asverze, Argonian Fangirl and all the new girls that have joined and made the group lively once more.

I think the group was a great idea, helps dis-spell the notion that women don't play video games nor could they enjoy them other than say if their partners did. Hope the group grows and develops even more.
