Getting around! Transportation in Skyrim

  • Whatever turns out to be the exact answer to the debate about whether it is a bit bigger or a bit smaller than Cyrodiil, there's no doubt at all that Skyrim is a BIG place. And over the course of our adventures in Skyrim we are clearly going to be doing a lot of travelling around....

    But how?

That's the subject of this topic - and the poll that I have opened up to gauge opinions. How are you going to be getting from A to B in Tamriel's most northerly province? Let's look at the options:

CARRIAGES  These were confirmed ages ago by Todd Howard but we've had little since. Apparently they traverse the distances between major cities in a similar fashion to the Silt Striders in Morrowind. Whether they will be carriages like in Red Dead Redemption where you can sit back and enjoy the view, or insta-travel like the Silt Striders is currently unknown.

FAST TRAVEL Loved and despised in equal measure by the fanbase, the 'Fast Travel' option made its debut inOblivion  and is confirmed to return. You won't be able to fast travel to a location until you've been there, so you'll need to use other ways to get to the main locations in the game once you are out of the tutorial.

HORSES  We've been talking about horses in our Creatures series, and included here for the sake of completion. Another viable option for crossing the terrain is galloping along on horseback.

WALKING The best way to take in the sights! However with no Athletics or Acrobatics skills in the game, there is now no character development reason to use Shank's pony. Nonetheless, game previews indicate we will miss a ton of cool content if we eschew this mode of travel.

    So what you will do?

Are you one of those who deliberately avoid fast travel for immersion purposes? Or are you tempted to click on fast travel to save time when you need to scoot on over to the next town to deliver something? What do you think and hope for with the carriages?

Let's talk about how we will travel around in Skyrim. And don't forget to vote in the poll :P

@ Andrew Williams- The picture is a Silt Strider from Morrowind. That's where the infamous line of "Why walk when you can ride?" came from. I don't know of Silt Strider lore, of if they only live in Morrowind, or just the Vvardenfell part of it, but I wou...  more

In Morrwind I generally walked. Probably would have quick traveled if I had the choice though. On the other hand, I found it more rewarding to walk in Morrowind than Oblivion. In Skyrim, I will walk as much as possible at first, but once I get far enough ...  more

The only reason I used fast travel in Oblivion was because it was boring to walk along the path. With the awesome scenery in Skyrim, I will be less tempted to fast travel. Other methods of travel are acceptable as well (horses, carriges, etc.)
    BTW, ...  more

I am going to try to use fast travel the least for immersion reasons.  I want to be able to walk everywhere so i can take in the sights and see what came out of all the time they took to create it.  The carriage idea seems to me to just be a version of fa...  more

I will be using a variety of transportation depending on circumstances and cost.  I want to try out the horse and see if they are easier to maneuver than they were in Oblivion.  I have used a form of Fast Travel in many of the CRPgs I have played because ...  more
