    Chapter 14: Bittersweet

    ScreenShot14-1

As I stared down at Mikael, my eyes were inexplicably drawn to his neck.

    ScreenShot14-2

It was beautiful, and I was mesmerized by the throbbing pulse of his heartbeat.

    ScreenShot14-3

I knelt down beside him, and I felt my mouth begin to water.

    ScreenShot14-4

I was entering a tunnel, and my whole being was focused on that one point on his neck.

    ScreenShot14-5

The vein was pulsing rhythmically.  It was hypnotic… and intoxicating.

    ScreenShot14-6

I felt a wave of heat coursing through my body, and I couldn’t hold back any longer.  I needed to have him.

    ScreenShot14-7

I leaned in and gently pressed my lips to his neck.  I was just going to give him a little kiss, but his neck tasted so sweet.

    ScreenShot14-8

I could feel the throbbing of his heart against my lips.  It was like the beating of a drum. The tempo began to pick up, and I could feel our heartbeats merging into one.  My body began to tingle as waves of warm pleasure washed over me.

    ScreenShot14-9

He started to moan with what I could only assume was delight.  He must have felt it too.  I lifted my lips from his neck for a moment and whispered to him, “I’m sorry if I woke you, love.  Don’t mind me.  You just looked so delicious that I couldn’t resist.  Go back to sleep.”  I pressed my lips to his neck once again and felt our heartbeats fall back in sync.

    ScreenShot14-10

The pleasure was even more intense this time.  I could feel my muscles tightening and my breathing become irregular.  Pleasure was pulsating through every part of my body.  I was approaching a precipice, on the verge of going over the edge.  My whole body was quivering.  I was filled to the brim and about to overflow.  Our hearts were pounding at a frenzied pace.  Everything disappeared, and it was just me, Mikael, and the pulsing of our hearts.

    ScreenShot14-11

The mounting tidal wave of euphoria came crashing down, and it was too much.  I let go of Mikael and fell back on my feet.  My whole body was trembling, and I was breathing hard.  It was as if an enormous pressure had been building, and it was finally released.  Then a great calm began to envelop me.  It felt amazing.

    ScreenShot14-12

I was in shock.  I had never felt something like that before.  I could still feel the pleasure radiating from deep within me, spreading outward in waves of sheer joy.

    ScreenShot14-13

I closed my eyes and just basked in the sensation.

    ScreenShot14-14

Everything that had been bothering me for the past few days was gone.  Even that incessant thirst was gone.  I was completely satisfied and at peace.

    ScreenShot14-15

When I opened my eyes, still in a daze, I couldn’t stop smiling.

    ScreenShot14-16

I looked down at Mikael to see if I had woken him, but something was terribly wrong.

    ScreenShot14-17

My breath caught in my throat as I stared at him.  His body was contorted in a strange position, and the bed was covered in… blood.

    ScreenShot14-18

This… this couldn’t be.  He was fine just a moment ago.  I was kissing him, and I heard him respond to me.

    ScreenShot14-19

Oh gods, I thought.  I didn’t know what to do.  What happened?  There was so much blood.  Could something have happened earlier when we were… together?  Maybe an old wound opened up?

    ScreenShot14-20

I leaned forward, terrified that he was… no.  He couldn’t be, I thought.  He was just unconscious.  Surely he would wake up if I spoke to him.  Then we could get him some help if he was injured.

    ScreenShot14-21

“M… Mikael?” I whispered.   “Please…”  My voice sounded so small.  Maybe he just couldn’t hear me.  “Mikael,” I said louder.  “Mikael, please say something.”

    ScreenShot14-22

Despite my pleading, he remained silent.  He was utterly still, and there was no indication that he was even breathing.

    ScreenShot14-23

I gasped as the true gravity of the situation began to dawn on me.  “Oh gods, no,” I whispered.

    ScreenShot14-24

As the horror set in, I shot to my feet, mortified by the reality that was becoming clear.

    ScreenShot14-25

Mikael was not just asleep.  Something terrible had happened, and he would never wake again.

    ScreenShot14-26

Hoping beyond hope that I was wrong, I reached down to touch him.  His skin was cold on my fingertips.

    ScreenShot14-27

Hesitantly, I turned him onto his back, and what I saw shook me to my core.

    ScreenShot14-28

The source of all that blood, the wound that had taken Mikael’s life, was on his neck.  On the exact spot I was kissing him only minutes ago, there were two small puncture marks.

    ScreenShot14-29

I collapsed to my knees in horror.  “No!” I cried out, and I became distinctly aware of the taste of blood in my mouth.  “Oh gods, what have I done?!”

    ScreenShot14-30

My worst fears were being realized.  I had become what I hated most.  I had become a murderer and a monster.

    ScreenShot14-31

All the pieces began to fall into place.  “Mikael!  Wake up!”  The sleepless nights.  “Please, Mikael!”  My aversion to sunlight.  “Oh gods, please!”  And that ghastly, unquenchable thirst.

    ScreenShot14-32

The tears were flowing freely now.  “What have I done?”  My lips were quivering so much it was hard to speak above a whisper.  “Mikael… I’m sorry.”

    ScreenShot14-33

My body shook with sobs.  “I’m so sorry.”
