The History of Reynard the Fox ≈ Chapter 1

  • Image-1-Ryd

The sun drifts on downwards, slipping gracefully, silently, between the sky and the land as day turns to dusk.  A fresh frost settles upon the still earth as a chill wind picks up in the dry night air.  The twin moons rise, and soon, the Aurora Borealis - the Goddess of the Northern Dawn - will be at play across the heavens - her glistening light dancing like cold fire upon the cloudless sky.

From my seat upon the Great Porch in Dragonsreach, my view of the lands that surround are unparalleled - a fitting place to write the journal of my life - the History of the Fox.

Across from me sits my lady wife, Ermilyn, whose company I have been blessed with for a great many years.  Age has been kind to her, as it has to me, and apart from her coat - which was once of a fine earthen red, has now, like mine, turned pure white, like the glistening snow which settles upon the tips of mountains - she is as beautiful, as graceful and as quick-witted as the day I met her, those many years ago.

We are both of us foxes - a race of people purged almost to extinction over a hundred years ago - a race of mammals who know 'ambition' above all other desires.  Our ambition, our swiftness of tongue and our sharpness of mind once brought us great wealth, success and influence in the days of yore.  Yet it was also our downfall.

I do not wish to linger upon the destruction of the Vulpines, so let it be enough to say that for a hundred years it was thought we were utterly extinct, and for the early years of my life, I was believed to be the only living descendant of that line.  Even now, sixty-five years after the day of my birth, only twelve of my kind are known to me in all of Tamriel.

I never thought myself the type to write down the adventures of my life; yet - as the winter of age draws its cloak around me, and as the flame of my soul ebbs to glowing embers - that is precisely what I fine myself setting out to do.

Mine is a life full of risk and opportunity, and I alone know the true story - most know only the 'truth' I fed them.  This account will work as more than just a standing monument to my past, however.  To those who study this work, who think and who listen, to those who can themselves utilize the subtle mechanisms and many wiles, tricks and lures I myself have used - than this work will teach you all you ever need know about the many ways whit can easily overcome strength.  After all, in a dog-eat-dog world, the fox will always reign supreme.

Only the sharpest of humans will be able to fathom the deeper meanings to the words herein - only foxes will truly understand them - and so, my intention in writing this work is to teach the new generation of foxes who have so recently arisen from extinction in the art of subtly, manipulation and deceit, so as to insure that the sudden, flaming return of our kind is not just a flicker of candlelight in the wind - that we remain here and do not die off again.

Take all that you read herein with a pinch of salt.  Take heed that I rarely say that which I truly mean.  Understand that no ties or bonds of alliance or friendship (save the bond of matrimony with my wife) hold me or bind me in any way beyond my own personal gain.  I am treacherous.  I am deceitful.  I am without mercy, compassion or gilt.  I would betray, blackmail or besmirch my closest friend if it advanced my own life sufficiently, without any care for the friendship lost or the trust betrayed.  I am faithless, cunning, double-dealing and traitorous.  And I am just like any other fox - an example of precisely the reason why men strove to be rid of us those hundred years ago.  But this story will be of no use to anyone unless I complete the writing of it, and thence, without further adieu, so let it be said...

Ok this is going to be interesting.......
It takes some guts for a new member to stick their head out of the fox hole and write about a new race.... I have to admit though you've started off rather well...

Thank you, Stoek, and I hope you like the Fox.  I think, in a way, it might be easier to start off with a new race as you don't - therefore - have to worry about every piece of 'lore' so much because you can just invent your own.

Looks good so far. Just remember to separate the parts of the chapter. You have to press the start button 2 times. :D
Also, I already love the new race. Looking forward to seeing how the story develops.
