Crossover: Chapter 20 - Massacre

  • It was just before dawn when Clint addressed the crowd of Gunners, fidgeting with the urge to attack “We take the city from the overhanging highway – they expect us to come knocking on their door but we can deliver death from above!”

A cheer rose up from the privates and Collins took his turn to address the crowd, “I would warn you that I have been exposed to a radioactive mutagen that allows me to transform into a far more powerful being – like that werewolf you all saw earlier. It is also the reason I wear these glasses” Collins took off his sunglasses and listened to the gasps and gulps of fear and awe as his burning orange eyes glowed in the night-time darkness.

“I am what you would call a vampire – and this is my true form” Collins gave into the urge to become what he truly was and his body transformed into the hideous vampire lord. His skin became a sickly grey as wings sprouted from his back while his eyes became an eerie black.

Collins spoke in a deep, guttural voice “I am Lord Commander Mark Collins – we shall attack”

The fearful gunners hesitated for a moment but quickly cheered in response, and the Gunners set off towards the overhang.

    *******************

A loud explosion woke all four of them up, “What the hell was that?” Bjorn yelled

“Gunners are attacking” Nigel replied quickly, he was already loading his laser rifle

“Well let’s get on with it and help!” San-Kai cried and cast Dragonhide while prepping fireballs

Bjorn and Lucy drew their battleaxe and shotgun, respectively, and ran with the others out the Church towards the scene of the battle. The Minutemen were already running around trying to get a shot.

“Where are they, Colonel?” Lucy shouted over the noise of gunfire

Colonel Ezra Hollis shouted back, “They’re attacking from the overhang! We’ve no defences!”

“Damn it” Nigel muttered and targeted a few Gunners but could get no shot – the percentage was too low.

Suddenly Lucy spotted him, the hideous vampire flying over the highway could be only one person, and San’s quick cast of detect undead only confirmed their fears.

Lucy tapped Nigel on the shoulder, “Collins is here”

“What?” Nigel looked to where Lucy pointed. “I’ll kill him, don’t worry”

“I’m more worried about the townspeople”

It was then that Ezra walked up to them, “Lucy and San, round up the townspeople – get them into the Church for safety, I was wrong to dismiss them last time”

“Yes Colonel” So Lucy and San-Kai ran off into every house, just as they had done before, to get the townspeople to the Church

“Nigel, can you get a shot?” Ezra asked, fearing the answer

“No, Ezra – I can’t get a good enough aim”

    “What is that...thing?”

“Commander Mark Collins – High-ranking Gunner and also a vampire”

    “We’re doomed” Ezra replied fearfully

    “Not yet – keep aiming”

    *******************

Twenty minutes later, Lucy and San-Kai had only managed to get twenty out of the sixty residents of Quincy in the Church. All of a sudden, another loud explosion could be heard directly above them and a large piece of the highway fell, crashing in front of the exit to the Church.

A scared settler could be heard screaming, “We’re trapped!”

San-Kai shouted to be heard above them all, “Calm down! This means the Gunners can’t get in – we’re far safer!”

Lucy whispered in San’s ear, “You have anything that can get us out of here?”

“A well-placed fire rune could get us out, not sure, though”

    *******************

Nigel and Bjorn were in the streets, fighting alongside the Minutemen. Bjorn ran over to Colonel Hollis and shouted to be heard over the gunfire, “How are we doing?”

“Twenty Residents safe in the Church, forty residents hiding in their homes, four Minutemen, you and Nigel”

“Damn! Any way to get the forty to safety?”

“No, they’ll be shot as soon as they exit” He paused to get a shot at an advancing Gunner. “The best we can hope for is that the twenty escape”

“I’ll try to tell ‘em!” Bjorn ran off towards the Church

    *******************

Lucy was leaning against the wall of the Church when she heard a loud bang on the window, she looked out of it – it was Bjorn!

“Lucy! You need to get out of there, get San to blast a hole!”

“We’re not leaving without you and Nigel!”

“Don’t worry we’ll catch you up!”

“You better!” Lucy yelled back, then walked over to San-Kai

    “What was that?”

“It was Bjorn – he says we need to get out of here, says you can blast a hole”

    “What about him and Nigel?”

“He says they’ll catch us up”

“I don’t like this, but fine” San prepped a spell in his hands and yelled to the scared residents, “I can get us out of here, but you need to get out of the way!”

The residents scrambled out of the way as San placed a powerful fire rune on the wall, he paused to look around and check they were far away enough then flung a fireball at the rune to activate it.

The wall was torn open and consumed in fire, but San quickly cast a frost spell to minimalize the smoke and fire leftover. Within seconds there was a large hole in the wall, Preston addressed the crowd.

“All of you! Follow me!” Preston ran out of the back of the Church

Almost all of the twenty ran off with him, except for two – Marcy and Jun Long

Lucy went up to them, “Why aren’t you going?”

“Our son Kyle – he’s still out there!” Jun replied

“Listen to me, go with Preston and San-Kai and I will find Kyle for you”

“No – we stay” Marcy answered

“Fine, but don’t move out of this Church” Lucy commanded and then called to San-Kai, “Let’s go and join Nigel and Bjorn!”

    *******************

Nigel was trying desperately to get a shot at a Gunner when Lucy and San-Kai arrived, “What the hell are you two doing here?”

“Helping you!” Lucy replied then fired a shotgun round at a Gunner private that Nigel didn’t see coming behind them

    “Fair enough – stay down!”

“Nigel – have you seen Kyle?”

    “Who?!”

    “The Long’s son”

“No – he’s likely still in his house”

Lucy ran off towards the Long’s house, shotgun in hand and ready to fire at anyone, she shot open the door and found him inside, Kyle Long – huddled up in a corner cradling a stuffed teddy.

    “Where’s my mum?”

“She’s safe Kyle; I’ll take you to her”

    “Okay, but I can’t walk”

    “It's fine – I’ll carry you”

Suddenly a massive explosion rocked the highway and about twenty gunners dropped from the highway, Collins as amongst them. Lucy could hear the dying groans of the few Minutemen that were left, she saw Collins’ hideous vampiric form turn and head towards her.

Suddenly he was in the doorway; Lucy instinctively protected Kyle as she listened to Collins’ deep, unearthly voice.

    “Hello, Lucy”

“Go away Collins – I’ll kill you”

“No I’ll kill you – but first I’ll kill Kyle”
