Crossover: Chapter 18 - Bloodshed

  • Nigel stood up and drew his laser rifle, “The Gunners are attacking?!”

Sturges nodded in reply and drew a pistol from his belt, “Nigel and somebody else, come with me to help defend”

“I’ll go” Bjorn answered, drawing his battle-axe

They were about to go off when Lucy called, “Wait – what do San and I do?”

“Escort the townspeople to safety!” Sturges called back, leaving the Church alongside Nigel and Bjorn.

Sturges briefed Nigel and Bjorn as they ran to the quickly assembled barricades, “There are about fifty of them and about sixty of us – but the majority of the city can’t fight so it’s more like fifty gunners versus ten of us”

Nigel nodded, “Any sign of the Minutemen?”

Sturges shook his head, “None – we’re doomed”

Bjorn slapped Sturges on the back, “Do not talk like that – we will win” Bjorn locked eyes with Nigel and in an instant Nigel knew what Bjorn was planning

Bjorn let out a roar of triumph as his mortal body was shed in favour of the strength of a wolf’s, Sturges looked on with a mix of horror and amazement as Nigel filled him in with a more believable lie, “He found some prototype FEV”

Bjorn, now a Werewolf, charged over the barricades. The sounds of dying gunners could be heard his claws ripped flesh from bone. In an instant ten Gunners were down, the others began retreating.

Suddenly the sound of a sniper could be heard; Nigel instinctively looked up to the source of the sound and spotted him. Lord Commander Mark Collins had survived, and he had just shot Bjorn.

The limp body of a wolf ran back to the Barricades and collapsed against them, one of the townspeople ran up –Jun Long.

“Hey Bjorn, didn’t know you were a wolf” Bjorn responded with a growl, “Well I’ll try to patch you up – can you change back?” This was responded to with another growl as his wolf body began to shrink and morph back into a human form, Bjorn was left surprised at everyone’s acceptance of a werewolf – it was nothing like Skyrim’s.

Jun Long grabbed his medical supplies and began work on the bullet wound, he looked up at a concerned Nigel and said, “He’ll be fine – his wolf body seems to have taken most of the impact”

Nigel nodded in reply and aimed his rifle up at Mark Collins, who seemed to anticipate the shot and dodged as the burning laser missed him. Nigel grunted and continued shooting at the Gunners that were attacking the barricades.

    *********************

Lucy and San sat in the Church amidst the people of Quincy; they’d managed to get the whole city inside the Church with the exception of Sturges, Jun Long and a few others who were fighting at the barricades. Marcy Long, the wife of Jun, sat in the corner of the Church comforting her son Kyle. Lucy smiled at how calm the boy seemed when he was with his mother but she also noticed how fearful Marcy was for her husband.

Lucy looked up a San-Kai, “Can you cast that calming spell on lots of people?”

“You mean the one I cast on you?” San wondered for a second. “I should be able to, wait – magic doesn’t exist in this world, does it?”

“No, hang on I’ll explain it” Lucy stood up and addressed the crowd. “My friend San-Kai is a mutated lizard exposed to FEV, he’s completely harmless and has a rare technology that will calm you all down” Lucy sat back down and whispered to San, “Cast it”

San stood up and charged the spell in both hands before releasing it upon the crowd, he could see the sudden relaxation on people’s faces and he sat down again.

Suddenly the sound of trumpets could be heard and there was suddenly more gunshots being fired,

    The Minutemen had arrived.

    *********************

Colonel Ezra Hollins and a group of only about five minutemen charged their laser muskets and fired at the Gunners, they began to fall but not fast enough.

“Well the Minutemen have arrived,” Nigel said with a laugh

Sturges took it more seriously, “There’s meant to be more!”

They spotted the Colonel in the distance gesturing to a minuteman to go and speak with them; the man had dark skin and a cowboy hat.

    “Preston Garvey – Commonwealth Minutemen”

“Where are the rest of your men?” Sturges immediately asked

“We’ve sent for more - now in the meantime, there’s a settlement that needs your help…”

Nigel interrupted, “You want us to abandon Quincy and go and help another settlement?”

“Well, yeah, we got this covered” Preston looked surprised

“We’ll stay here, idiot” Nigel spat back

“Here, I’ll mark it on your map…”

“SHUT UP!” Nigel shouted. “We need to defend Quincy, go to the Church and help guard them!”

“Uh, alright,” Preston said as he ran off towards the church

Sturges looked worriedly to Nigel, “There’s not enough – we won’t last long enough to see reinforcements”

    “We can try”

    *********************

Mama Murphy sat on a pew in Quincy church, muttering quietly to herself. Marcy, Jun and Kyle were all together in a corner after Jun had returned from helping Bjorn. Sturges was desperately trying to get his Power Armour to work so it could help in the fight and Preston was comforting a few people.

Lucy and San-Kai stood at the entrance, hearing the sounds of gunshots and lasers as they saw Nigel firing rounds off into the distance.

    “Shall we help?” San asked

“Not yet, they seem to be coping and we need to protect the settlers” Lucy replied

At that moment Colonel Ezra Hollins walked into the Church, “The Minutemen are reinforcing the walls –you can all go back to your homes”

The cheers from the settlers blocked any protest from Lucy or San-Kai as the settlers charged forwards to get back to their homes. Ezra pointed at Preston and Sturges, “You two, help us reinforce the walls”

“Sure thing Colonel” Preston replied as him and Sturges went on to help carry the lumber

Nigel walked back on into the Church with Bjorn, “The Gunners have retreated for now but they’ve got the town surrounded, I’ll patrol for the night with a few minutemen but you can all sleep for now”

They all went on over to their beds as Nigel drew his rifle and gazed over at the spot where he last saw Collins, he knew inside that the war for Quincy would last a few days – but he was determined to fight for all of it.

Because if there’s one thing everyone around him knew, it was that Nigel knew how to hold a grudge,

Collins had hurt his friend - and Nigel would hurt him.
