Athis was always a more noble Dunmer than you'd ever find around Skyrim. He'd always had a sense of Nord's honor, and even some overconfidence. Hverg saw potential in him when he first saw him get his rear handed to him, and asked him if he would accompany him in his journey. He would train him personally, to see if he had what it took to inherit the mantle of Harbinger, as well as give him the life experience to understand what it meant to fight further.
