Asks-Many-QuestionsI think WoW's armor works, because the rest of the art design (characters, architecture, environment) is just as exaggerated and ridiculous. There's a distinct style to the entire world (of Warcraft) that lends itself to that kind of overwrought design.

The problem shows up when you try and apply those same design tics (huge shoulderpads, unnecessary spikes, impractical clothing) to a more "realistic" world where everything is meant to look reasonably like the real world. That's when it starts to break down. less
