Of course, this doesn't mean you can't just focus on a single aspect of a School. A mage may only cast telekinesis as their only alteration spell for their whole life but the second they cast a flesh spell they will likely be as skilled in that as telekinesis, despite casting it for the first time.

As it stands in Skyrim I would agree but if we look at Morrowind, we are able to create our own spells and vary the strength in them. With this in mind could someone who focuses on telekinesis more than the other Alteration spells be able to form a stronger spell than what most Alteration mages would be able to use.

One spell I created was my twin moon spell. It consisted of Fire, Frost and Shock. Two of these elements revolved around a centre ball creating 'two moons' hence the name of the spell. Skyrim done away with spell creation so they are set out with specific strengths. I can't help but feel someone could pour in more magica and specialize with one particular type of spell and take the limits further than most.

But even spellmaking is based off your character's knowledge of a School of Magic. I'm assuming spellcrafting is similar in Morrowind and Oblivion. In Oblivion you could create extremely powerful spells but only if your character's skill was high enough. You could create a fireball spell that had a large enough radius and damage to kill everyone in Bruma in one cast, then you could create an ice and lightning spell that are equally powerful.

Hey guys aside from Tiber Septim, Red-Eagle and Titus Mede, do we know of any other named conquerors or warlords?

Cuhlecain - Colovian\Reachman warlord turned Emperor Zero.

Reman Cyrodiil - Colovian warlord who became the greatest Emperor Cyrodill ever had.

Vrage the Gifted - Founder of the First Empire of the Nords.

Darloc Brae - Khajiit Warlord called the Beast of Anequina.

Indoril Nerevar - People don't talk about it much but I'm pretty sure much of Indoril's uniting of the Dunmer clans and Houses was done by force.

Durcorach - Called the Black Drake. King of the Reach and the first of the Longhouse Emperors.

Baloth Bloodtusk - Orc warlord and leader of the Savage Sons.

Tarish-Zi - Yoku Emperor and leader of the Ra Gada warior wave called the Anka-Ra.

Are there records of some sort of technology in TES, either man made or magical, that allows people to cause damage over obstacles?

Edit: Like a grenade, but Elder Scrollsy.

I think the ice storm spell (as well as any frost AOE spell in Oblivion) can go through walls. Technology-wise I'm not sure but dwarves have created technology that allows crossbow bolts to explode, I have no doubt the same technology could be applied to a small, throwable item.

Hm. Maybe a mortar is a better comparison. Something that arcs up and over. Can mages control the trajectory of their spells? Make them hone somehow? It just seems odd that warfare hasn't evolved to this point yet. Catapults exist, we see those in the civil war, but I was also thinking something smaller scale. I also find it odd that no one has engineered projectile or throwable explosives in any significant capacity.

Ah, so you're looking for something stronger? Magic isn't affected by gravity, as far as I know, so it's unlikely you can arc a fireball over a wall. Again, dwarves are your best bet. It's not confirmed that dwarves used mortar-esque weapons for sieges yet but exploding bolts were found only recently, there's many more things we could learn from dwarven ruins. As for the sorry state of current technology just look at history, Tamriel is always plagued by war and even afterwards it has maybe 50 years before the next government-toppling crisis comes along. Most of Tamriel's version of "scientists" are just studying arcane secrets, I have a feeling magic would put a huge damper on technological advancement.

That makes sense. I figured the dwemer would have had that tech, but couldn't confirm. You've given me a thought though, and I need to turn it into a thread before I forget.

What would happen to a follower of Hircine if they don't become a Werewolf or any Werebeast? I am curious because it seems most followers of him become Werewolves/beast, and I was wondering what would happen if a hunter is a devote follower of him, but never becomes a Werewolf/beast.
