Lore Discussion: Nords, Mercenaries of Skyrim

They're called 'sell'-swords for a reason. Plus, they would probably ask for a lot of money if they were asked to do it.

Besides, I don't think they care about what the common Nords think about them unless they care about a good rep. They're hated, true. But at the end of the day, swords are sharper than tongues.

But the initial topic was actually about that,

When you look at Nord´s culture...how are mercenaries perceived? Is fighting for someone´s else cause and for gold a worthy line of work?

and that's what I'm talking about, not whether mercs are good or bad.

Aye, and we can compare that to Ysgramor and his 500. The morality of their actions never factored in, they thought themselves perfectly justified. The Nords can justify a lot of their actions, provided personal honour remains intact and they act with bravery and prowess.

Where does that involves taking orders from "milk drinkers"?

I reckon the Nords did go soft and it is Jurgen's fault - and Paarthurnax's.

Is that really a bad thing?

You and I are so in sync here, Phil, it's not even funny.

You two surely like to blame Parthy for everything

Huh, I don´t remember that Aela´s line, but it surely sheds more light on Companions. I mean, they don´t do anything for free, right?

They're like Delphine minus the attitude.

Only really insofar as how they can justify things. "Reman? Totally a Nord, we'll follow him. Talos? He was totally a Nord from Atmora!" Nord science

I reckon the Nords did go soft and it is Jurgen's fault - and Paarthurnax's.

I don't want to be the judge of that. Too many variables, what if Jurgen didn't? What if...? What I want to know is why. Daedric Script on Jurgen's tomb, Hermaeus Mora? Or is it Paarthurnax? History says Jurgen got an epiphany. But what if it wasn't a revelation? What if it was the old Dovah?

You and I are so in sync here, Phil, it's not even funny.

You and I Lis, we dance to the rhythm of the Two Moons

Well, it wouldn't be the first time Hermaeus Mora interfered with Nords. And Paarthurnax isn't a saint either.

Good point, Jason. So you're saying that Companions hold the monopoly on the mercenary market because of their renown and history as honorable warriors? That people would rather wait for Companions than hire the merc that is right in the inn?
