Here is a beta test of my proposed idea to present characters not as mechanical playthroughs, but as personalities and character profiles. This is to appease the want for more Role Play centered characters as, personally, I sometimes feel a paragraph or two is not enough to share what a true character in Elder Scrolls games are all about.

    Helithil, Thaumaturge

    First Name: Helithil

    Last Name: N/A

    Aliases/Nicknames: Traveler

    Sex: Male

    Race/Ethnicity: Altmer

    Class: Thaumaturge

Alignment: Chaotic Good. Rejects those who are steadfast in old, worn out traditions of society and searches for new ways to better the cultures around him through study and magic schools on the arcane art.

    Title(s): Conjurer, Abjurer

    Age: 438

    Appearance

A slender, tall, younger Altmer with less angular features in his face. A welcoming stature. Not overbearing like some Altmer

Skin Tone: Darker yellow/light brown. Similar to the ancient Ayleids.

    Height: 6'3"

    Weight: 185lbs

    Build: Slender, lean muscle, athletic

    Eyes: Dark green

    Hair: Dark brown, slight greying

Apparel: Decorative light glass plates, blue stoned circlet and occasional light glass helmet

Tattoos, Piercings, Marks, Scars, etc.: No visible markings.

Weapons: Bound Sword, Bound Bow, Staff

Special Abilities/Skills: Especially skilled in conjuration, alteration, and restoration. He favors defensive magics while summoning powerful allies from the dead and the endless planes of Oblivion.

Place of Birth: Alinor, Summerset Isles

Religion: No fixed worship or religious practices. A stout personal respect for all deities and constantly trying to learn more about the Aedra and Daedra and their places in the universe.Residence: None. Traveler of Tamriel.

Political Affiliation: Favors nationalism and individualism for the provinces.

Education: Former apprentice to many battlemages and sages from the Isles and currently studies magics and literature of the Skyrim region along his travels.

Languages spoken: A deep scholar of most Ehlnofex languages, collector of books.

Occupation: Freelance adventurer, bounty hunter, and mage for hire.

    Organizations/Factions: None.

    Favorite food/drink: Rare wines.

Hobbies/Interests: Reading rare books, learning new spells, and the Daedric planes all interest

Serious Problems/Flaws/Addictions/Disorders/Disabilities: Consistently inconsistent. Erratic behaviors due to obsessions of the other planes of existence and will stop at nothing to gain more knowledge. Never greedy for power, but always in search of the secrets of Aetherius.

Citizenship: Son of Alinor, yet holds no official title of citizenship during his travels.

Relationship Status: Single. Relationships have been nothing but heartache and turmoil for Helithil. His studies have become the focus of his life and allows him to be distracted just enough to suppress the pain of his early life.

Personality: Stand-offish, but will befriend those who display friendly body language. Strange in his daily doings, he is often too focused on his adventures to claim any friends or close acquaintances. His obsessions with the Daedra and magical studies have made him isolated to some social interactions and thus does come across as bizarre to some.

    Thaumaturgy

Thaumaturgy is the art of creating powerful magical effects through the use of seemingly ordinary means. Helithil, as a character in Skyrim, has been played as a non-crafting mage, making use of general items such as food, alcohol, Daedric artifacts, and basic found-as-loot items to be an incredibly powerful mage. The study of Thaumaturgy in the Elder Scrolls lore is one of forgotten aspects, split up into schools of magic we know of now. A thaumaturge can summon great creatures of destruction and wreak havoc of elemental whirlwinds and yet, at the same time, restore peace with restorative spells and defensive spells to protect him or herself and those around him or her.

    Backstory

Helithil, born in Alinor, was always on the move. Ready to explore and to ask questions, his parents and those around him worried that he might tarnish the family and Altmer race as a whole if he were exposed to other cultures and races of Tamriel. Studying magic arts at a very young age, Helithil discovered the wonders of the various Daedric planes and dedicated his life to learning more about them, always pushing to see them all in his lifetime.

Not worshipping or belonging to one deity, Helithil is of a pantheistic world view. Taking in all that is around him, he learned what he could about the mystic powers of Aetherius until voyaging to mainland Tamriel in search for more answers. Landing with a small vessel and crew on the shores of Hammerfell, he quickly learned the harshness of society and thrown into his individual life, hardening his spirit but never breaking his open minded personality.

Helithil travelled Tamriel, first venturing Southeast to elven lands of Valenwood and the tropical deserts of Elswyer. Never satisfied with his findings, he decided to travel North to share his own skills in order to make a name for himself as well as practicing his arts in a more practical way. In Cyrodiil, he found kinship among other mages of the Imperial City and quickly took to practices master mages and learning from them, jumping as apprentice from master to master.

Helithil's travels eventually brought him to Skyrim. With the hearing of the outbreak of Dragons and the reawakening of ancients evils, Helithil decides to take to his practices and apply them for the Empire under the direction of his fellow master battlemages in order to advance in name and skill. It is there, in Skyrim, that Helithil finds contact with the various Daedra and is enthralled with their practices, wants, and needs and is unwilling to leave before contacting them and unraveling his long unanswered questions of the Daedra's true nature...

***As us Role Players, it is important to realize when you present a character, you present it in your OWN way since not every character is the same. Themes of these profiles should be varied. Categories/topics listed here in this discussion is what is appropriate right now for this character and is subject to change. So please, share your characters. Details out their lives, give us the nitty gritty, and provides a concise backstory. Text is where Role Players really shine and I hope to see some great contributions in the coming months.

ITS DONE! YES! Thank you for doing this, it can't have been easy, with two or three successive hosts failing at the task, but I think it's fitting that a master of character builds produces the Blog's first ever Profile. And what a good start it is too. I'm going to get working on mine, and I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with as well. Nice job. Sorry for being a bit of a pest about it, but it's been a while since their conception. I'm looking forward to what's to come.

Thaumaturge... Sounds like some school of magic for drunk wizards...

And Brynjolf's going to work on it already.

Haha, don't mind me. I just like messing with people and just want to make sure I type up something worthwhile.

I am excited to. This is just a prototype. I had two options really: be concise and widdle down the options of what to include OR include as much as I could and detail the character out. I think I found a happy medium, not being too "word vomit-ish" while allowing some wiggle room for others to possibly try a character like this. I wanted to include a "Motivation" section, but I thought that with text being out best friend here in the RP group, our writing should be read not only for first eye context, but also between the lines. There is no "motivation" section here, but you know what he is all about and what he strives to do. Hopefully as we go along we can refine these more and discover individual character personalities ... I am stoked.

I know it is a real name of a class... Doesn't make it less laughable :P

Stoked is a good word for it.

Well, I gotta hand it to the creators of what we know as "the build" here on TSB. I told myself I can only do what I know how to do well, I just want to do it in a different way: show a character as a personality, not as a mechanism of recreation.

If the builds in CB are the make and model of a car, the Profiles can act as the test driver's feelings and review of the car ride, aesthetic, and overall personality.

The idea of an Abjurer is one of protective magics, able to heal/shield etc. The whole "rejection" of traditionalists in terms of culture is not to say he is against nationalistic pride and thinking of the past and heritage, but not adhering to a culture which does not change and adapt to the coming times. This is to say he would be against Thalmor rule in elves being the "only ones capable of saving Tamriel" or "Stormcloaks wanting to go back to unchanging roots" which could cripple a modern day Skyrim in his eyes.

Like a two-part sort of thing? Because I was thinking a lot of these will probably be in two parts anyway.

Yeah, sort of like a "read on if you would like" or just stay and get the basic idea. I dig it. I also want to, when the time is right, get to character journals which can link into these profiles, detailing certain life events or personality traits.

A journal entry in which an assassin killing an entire town for no reason is a good "read between the lines" into the life of a ruthless killer ... showing who or what he/she is without saying lamely "I KILLZ ALL".
