Quirks, Ticks and Habits

When creating a new character, I always struggle with one aspect (I try to use Vix's background question list)

I can never think of any quirks, ticks or habits; so I'd like to hear yours just to get some inspiration  (I'm gonna steal your marvelous ideas muahaha )

Thanks! I just realised I do quite some of those already haha I always take off my helmet, and I play with realism mods (food, thirst, sleep). The only other one I  usually remember of is my taste for hoarding books

The character I'm playing right now is a thief and former brigand, a few habits he has are - A skooma addiction, he takes a few bottles each day - Alchaholism, he usually finds himself at the local tavern in the evenings, while listening to the Bard or locals conversing, which is a great way to find out about a town - Stealing valuables where ever he finds them, although I guess that's expected - All this aside he also has a soft side and visits that little dead girls grave in Morthal each month, and places a flower on the coffin I love giving my characters depth and...well character. It's like an interactive drama, and you're the writer!

One orc character I have grew up in a castle in Cyrodiil. When appearing before a Jarl, he changes into fine clothes and fancy jewelry. When traveling with a fellow orc, he makes them wait outside the castle so they don't make fun of his "girly clothes" and "flowery talk"

My most colorful character is, by far, my Nord, Brearth. I often refer to him as an "ambush predator", since I tend to sneak up on his targets to close as much of the distance between them as possible while undetected before charging in with his shield and war axe. He also has a massive alpha male ego, so he is compelled to fight any predator he sees, especially bears (because he was designed to be so much like one). He also never carries anything on him that he doesn't need, which, until he found that running into Draugr Death Lords was going to be a common thing, included more than one weapon, and this same idea causes him to stash his gold in hidden places around Skyrim. He also travels exclusively by foot, as he has a phobia of horses.

My Orc Legate, Burzadreg, cares so strongly for his comrades that he goes out of his way to recycle the weapons and armor of fallen Legion troops back into service by repairing them via his smithing skills and selling them to the Legion blacksmith in Solitude. He also wears a different set of armor depending on what he's doing. For example: If he were out hunting bandits/Stormcloaks he would wear his Legion armor, while he would wear Dragonplate if he were hunting dragons (during dragons hunts he always brings the Blades that he recruited and has Esbern say the dragon hunting prayer for him).

    • Placing offerings to divine shrines and visit temples regularly (if religious)
    • Sharpen your blade from time to time (just sit down to the grindstone)
    • You have big muscles how you maintain them?
Eat meat, not tons, but eat.
      Run few circles.
Crouch and stand up (squat), if you are stronger, put armor chespiece on to increase efficiency.
Work at lumbermill: perfect for arm and back.
    • Exercise with your weapon with training dummies.
    • Bathe from time to time
    • Drink frost resistance potion when roamin northern lands.
I even like to use Skaal armor for this (Dragonborn DLC)
    • Pickpocket nobles and rich, sell stolen trinkets and place money into poor people's inventory. Selling is essential because if a specific stolen item is found at a person it is likely they'll be taken to prison, but authorities cannot do anything if they find only coins.
    • It is an addition to the previous one: some say thieves guild is a bunch of gold-hungry criminals and cannot roleplay being "Robin Hood"... Do the same as they do. Use the guild for your own purpose: Use fences to generate coin and distribute it among the poor.

    Hearthfire:

    • With a kind-hearted father figure character, I like to tend my little kitchengarden and cooking and baking for family
    • Checking on (if having) family regularly.
    • Bringing presents particularly to them.

Edit: Some might not be habit or quirks, sorry I was carried away.

I can't believe this was missed by me and hasn't had that many replies! This needs more. Wear clothes instead of armor: It must get uncomfortable in it everyday Make different versions of armor or different types: why would you wear the same type of armor? Repair it and switch out, or just clean it. Use the grindstone even if you can't improve your weapon: you still need to repair it right?

I usually give my character a fear, and then I give them quirks that relate to that fear. For example: I have recently played a very anxious warrior who has a strong fear of spiders, whenever faced with a spider, he has to drink a potion of fortify one handed, to give him more confidence in his abilities. He also checks his weapons a lot, he does this by first blocking with his sword to inspect it closely, then he blocks with his shield and draws his bow. This is because he needs to know that if he faces an enemy suddenly (especially spiders) he is ready for them. Hoped this helped :)

quirks are always my favorite to come up with. My favorite so far is a synesthetic character (google it), but to more of an extreme. For instance, my shy mage, Raenil, can't use darker magicks (soul gems)because she can hear the souls inside the gems/feel them trying to claw their way out when she touches them. It's a bit weird, but it's fun from a role-play perspective. Another habit I use a lot is a character who always picks lavender because her mom always used a lavender perfume and she misses home.

You could have a character who bites his nails so badly that he has to wear gloves all the time in order to prevent him from ripping his nails to shreds.
