Skyrim: Freeplay

  • November 3, 2016

Hello Vault Dwellers, and welcome to Skyrim: Freeplay! Over the course of the last few months, a small group of members have been working with each other to create a fun roleplaying experience that everyone can enjoy. Skyrim: Freeplay is group in which you can become your character and interact with other characters that Vault members have created. There are very few rules and systems for this game, we just wanted to create a fun atmosphere for all who wish to roleplay together!

After creating a character, players can choose to do a number of things; from interacting with other players in existing locations to going on GM-run adventures throughout Skyrim. The possibilities for your character are endless - you won’t need to keep track of equipment or have pages of useless stats, we only ask that you keep your background somewhat realistic (for example, please don’t create “Epic Characters” such as a Dragonborn or the Archmage of the Mage’s College - that’s unfair to other players!).

This game will take place in Helgen, two years after it was destroyed by Alduin. The town is small and it is still rebuilding, but the town’s location in Skyrim brings in a lot of travelers and merchants. There are not many houses or buildings just yet, but with enough help the small town will be able to flourish once again! The events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are still underway, and things in Skyrim are always changing. Players can join a number of familiar factions, ranging from the dwindling ranks of the Thieve’s Guild to the widely renown Companions of Whiterun. Joining a faction will open up new types of quests that each player can undertake, and will also earn your character a reputation as either a known or rumored associate of said faction.

There is a lot that you can do in this game, but above all we want you to enjoy it! Be whoever you want to be, go wherever you want to go, and do whatever you want to do! Skyrim: Freeplay will be open to the public in a few weeks, and we hope to see all of you there!

    About The Game:

Skyrim: Freeplay takes place in 4E 203, two years after the events of Skyrim begin, in the now rebuilding town of Helgen. The newly-rebuilding city is drawing attention from all across Tamriel, as would-be dragonslayers and fortune seekers have all taken interest in the town first visited by the World Eater.

As a player, you can choose from any of the races that exist in the TES universe. From Skyrim’s native Nords to the serpentine Tsaesci of Akavir, you can choose any race you would like to play as. There are no drawbacks or penalties for your racial selection, we just ask that you create a backstory that makes sense lore-wise and isn’t too far fetched.

You don’t need to worry about tracking the amount of gold your character has or the items you use, the point of this group is to have fun and enjoy yourself and by limiting your roleplaying potential with items and gold we would be taking away a good portion of the fun that this group has to offer! That isn’t to say that there won’t be rewards to those who stand out as excellent roleplayers; characters who go above and beyond in the name of roleplaying may be able to earn epic rewards such as large-scale quests based around the character’s backstory, special interactions with NPCs, and even the ability to temporarily become the Champion of a Daedric Prince!

    A History of Helgen:

Throughout the majority of the Fourth Era, Helgen stood strong as both the Empire’s second most fortified stronghold in Skyrim (second only to Castle Dour) and a well-established trading community. It was not uncommon for wagons from Cyrodiil to wheel into town, often times carrying either a variety of imported goods or a handful of Imperial soldiers. Though not every resident was happy with the Imperial presence in their small town, very few spoke against their occupation until after the Civil War between the Legion and the Stormcloaks broke out. However, even though many of the town’s citizens had differing views on the war, all was well in Helgen for a number of years until one fateful day in 4E 201.

On that day, an Imperial Courier ran into town yelling that the Legion had captured Ulfric Stormcloak along with a handful of his rebel soldiers and were bringing them all to Helgen to be executed. The Legion, along with their supporters in the town, prepared the area outside of Helgen Keep for the executioner and awaited for the arrival of the Legion and their prisoners. Tensions were high in the city as Ulfric arrived, and many people shouted anti-Legion and anti-Stormcloak rhetoric as the first of the executions were carried out. However, something soon took place that nobody could have anticipated. As an unknown prisoner was to be put to the axe a great roar filled the air, and for the first time in centuries a dragon was seen flying through the air. A small battle took place as the citizens of Helgen tried to defend themselves against the World Eater, but they were no match for the wyrm. Helgen was destroyed, and most of its citizens were slain in the dragonfire.

After the events of that day, few people were brave enough to set foot back in the ruins of the destroyed town. Those who were not often found themselves attacked by a group of bandits that had taken up residence within the crumbling walls of the town. For almost a year bandits controlled Helgen until a group of former soldiers managed to break their lines and push them out. Rather than simply continue through the town and leave it abandoned, they chose to take a different path. Half of the group stayed and began clearing the rubble left by the dragon attack, and the other half split up and traveled to the various Holds of Skyrim to ask for assistance in rebuilding the once-thriving town. Though they initially received very little assistance, they managed to convince enough people to help them rebuild.

Now, two years after Alduin’s attack on Helgen, the city is once again beginning to establish itself. The former soldiers who rebuilt the town now serve as the town’s guards, and have taken residence in the old Keep. A small group of merchants have begun setting up shops, and a small inn and tavern was built to give people a place to rest their heads. The town is still growing, but is once again functioning normally. Adventurers, merchants, and soldiers on both sides of the war can occasionally be seen making their way through town or spending a night at the inn.

We hope you are all as excited for the launch of Skyrim: Freeplay as we are! Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, we'll be sure to answer them as we can! Thank you all for reading, and I hope to see you in chat!

So basically, this is LRP all over again?

  • November 3, 2016

No, not quite. While both this group and the old LRP group were both built around roleplaying, this group is not focused on systems and is made to be a casual group for member interaction - LRP was a combat-focused group that, at its core, had pitted every character against one another.

Gotcha. Also, I remember you mentioning that you were working on a roleplaying project of sorts a while back; was this it?

  • November 3, 2016

Originally it was a much different project, but it did turn into this.

Awesome!!! I love the idea, I'm not really sure how this will be played and how to play, but looks really fun. I can say If I join this Helgen will have a really influentieal merchant names Septimus Darkforges, a greedy but kind Imperial merchant, someone who had traveled a lot from all Cyrodiil and Morrowind and now to Skyrim, he is also a plot person, to comparing him with a character of Skyrim could be compared with Maven Black Briar.

Here you can have a brief look of this character and his short description :)

    Septimus Darkforges

By the way If for some reason want to know more of this character here is part of his long story:

    My-Project-The-Dark-Legion-Cult

So this character will have a lot to offer to Helgen and help about the management or at least in their economy and community.

    To think about his beginning,

Would be (as it said on the "A History of Helgen"):

"It was not uncommon for wagons from Cyrodiil to wheel into town, often times carrying either a variety of imported goods or a handful of Imperial soldiers"- This character will be an Imperial Mechant coming from Cyrodiil

@Chris - The current team is actually entirely made up of former LRP GMs (Todd, Morthevin, Sand, and myself), so we are all well aware of it's prior history. I'm not sure how much you'd trust Todd's word after what happened, but we did make him agree to be more open with both the GMs and Players this time around, and I'm confident he'll keep to what he said.

@Medieval - Glad to hear you're excited about the group! I had a quick look over your character, and I think he'll fit in perfectly! As for how to play the game, most interactions will be done through chat boxes, so it should be fairly easy to get the hang of. I don't want to give too much away just yet, but I will see about getting a few "How to Play" guides to help new Players.

I'm very excited to finally see this come to fruition after hearing about it. Will there be a possibility to make factions of sorts by different characters joining forces? Because having a mafia-esque group would be right up my alley.

Regardless, I'll be submitting my character shortly. Can't wait to get started.

Do whatever you wish, should it remain in the boundaries of the game itself Zonnonn. Should this project succeed you can do whatever comes to your mind in the game, be it create your own faction or even start a war!

Except starting wars is Morty's job :P

Wars you say? That gives me... ideas.

Sounds good guys, this sounds like a lot of fun.

Well, we won't be making people play if they don't want to, so there's no harm done there! I do look forward to seeing those who do want to roleplay in the group's chat!
