WIP Skyrim Build/Playthrough: Amo's Ashlander Adventure

  • April 18, 2017

See long post near end of the second page for full updated info!!!!

Greetings all you lovely vault dwellers. I come to you with open arms and in need of help. With my most recent Fallout 4 build coming to an end I really feel it is time to switch back to Skyrim and take a break from all the FO4 builds (barring any events). In preparation for that I am hoping to get some community involvement and feedback on my character design process because I want to do something different. Instead of a build (or perhaps in addition to depending on how unique we can get here) I want to do a story based RP to write, post and share with those that are interested. All my ideas are flexible and open to changes and it's still super early in my brainstorming. In the meantime I am breaking up my Fallout time with Morrowind which is fueling a lot of my ideas.

My basic premise I have so far I will call 'Amo's Ashlander Adventure'. Therefore you will all be my Triple A support group, congratulations!

I do want this to be a heavily modded playthrough on the SPECIAL EDITION. So that will make a big impact on mod choices.

I really don't know a lot for the character motivations and personality but I really like the idea of doing an arcane assassin style character similar to what CouchWarrior is doing with his Shadeling character if you follow his YouTube.

I will use ordinator perks and currently I am thinking alchemy and sneak for sure. Probably some level of illusion, destruction, light armor, one handed and smithing. A few other options of various perk points could be enchanting and speech and maybe archery although I really want to stay away from bows and focus on stealth combat. I really love CW's use of the apocalypse spells package and plan to use that myself.

Now then what I need from my AAA support group is ideas, lots of ideas! Disclaimer: No promises I will use them but I would love to hear anything and everything that pops into your mind and I will post the same so hopefully we can get some good community collaboration. I need mod ideas (remember special edition), quest ideas, RP ideas, dragonborn yes or no?, and which alternative start sounds good for him?

As I said earlier basic idea is a dunmer ashlander arcane assassin (another triple A! Lol) and looking for ideas of how to build, play and even share him with all of you.

Thanks ahead of time for any input!

    Sincerely,

    Amo

One brainstorm idea I have had so far is to have the character have an aversion to metal meaning no metal based armor or weapons leaving him to focus on things like bone, wood, stone, leather, etc. Little metal accents could be RPed as some other material.

Hello, I 'll just throw a random idea. You could make him an outcast that dabbles in Necromancy and that could also serve as his reason for going to Skyrim.

For something like that I would go one handed - dagger, light armor, alchemy, frost magic, conjuration - necromancy, sneak. You could even go unarmored for more fun when you get detected :P. Also you might want to look into Alteration as well I think there are some good Apocalypse Alteration spells for assassins.

An assassin that will be able to use poisons along with necromancy and frost spells should be quite deadly and fun to play.

    Good luck with your project.

(Also why can't I get lines between my paragraphs on the site all of a sudden? :/)

I like this idea, kind of like a Druid in DnD. And if you want to build on this, maybe your character has gained some powers or abilities, but in exchange has more aversions/ weaknesses to certain things. Kinda like a Warlock (I think) in DnD, but with some nice flavour added in to keep it interesting and original. For example, taking a pact with Hircine, a wild and untamed Daedra, could be the reason for no metal, but could extend to other things like uncontrollable rage or an untameable desire to stalk and kill prey.

Thanks for the responses guys. I really am torn now because I was thinking going anti-undead and therefore seeking out things like necromancers and vampires as a key motivation however I like the idea of the outcast necromancer. I was thinking fire and ash magic (modded) for him though. I'll have to think on the necromancy aspect maybe come up with some cool twists. I'll also look into alteration I've never used that school with ordinator/apoc spells before. Thanks Duvain! Right Zoonnon? That is exactly what I was thinking with no metal. Could really make early game very challenging too. No iron, no steel. Will keep brainstorming reasons why that is. I like the daedra connection but perhaps it's a curse! Maybe tied to being outcast from his tribe? Keep the ideas coming, thanks all!

Cool approach here Amo, I really like that you want to make it a community thing, to absorb the inspiration-spells fired at ya! :D

For me, I'd want to know who he or she is, where they fit in the world. Are they part of a known Ashalnder tribe, or one you have made up? I'd then refer to Karver's Ashlanders and their Ways to really get a hook into the character, then maybe find a way to twist it. Say, a Mabrigash tribesmer who sees the world differently and has their own interpretation on the Ghost Snake. Probably then i woud start looking at art. I woud then use that lore and character background to help inform what skills and quests he or she would do, what they should wear and that sort of stuff :)

But that's just me - lore, then art, then character takes shape in my mind.

Thanks Phil, I hear you on that one regarding lore and finding good art for inspiration. I won't be starting this character for a good month so lots of time to flesh them out and figure out exactly how I will share them with the community. Probably write some preliminary stuff in the meantime. Regarding idea what about this- fire magic and he uses the ash from his kills to summon ash spawn and ash guardians in a pseudo-necromancy aspect. Game mechanic wise you can summon ash creatures but only after you burn an enemy to ash (which you will more so at higher levels as you get more perks, pretty sure ordinator has a perk you can get eventually that is almost a 100 percent chance to do it). This usage of ash could have brought on some issues in his past from an RP standpoint. Loving the input!

Alright well I am finally home and able to put spaces in my posts again, yay. So a few thoughts I have had throughout the day that I wanted to get down in no particular order:

First- I do really like the idea of using the ash left from an incinerated enemy as "fuel" for summoning ash creatures. I think it is really thematic and fits the vibe well. This is almost like necromancy...but not...but really kind of is just ash and not a pile of dead but mostly whole flesh, or even just bones. This can also be a source of conflict RP wise.

Second- Really like the no metal, makes for a unique challenge and the idea of being cursed seems good so far. Perhaps the character was cursed by a daedra and when he has metal on him (or perhaps like just iron or something....having an aversion to gold is virtually impossible to play as.....) or some level...not sure need to hammer out the details but basically metal=unable to cast magic. Which for this character would be hard but not impossible allowing certain game components to be able to be passed -example go find Amren's sword-.

Third- I know this seems like a hardcore dunmer build (lore-wise) and obviously the Morag Tong would be the way to go but thats not really an option so I think even though thats the nice thematic option and I could go wholesale slaughter on the Dark Brotherhood I would like to play that quest so that one seems in. Mages College.....maybe? Not sure, good resources there but doesn't fit the theme. Thieves guild feels a lot like that. Companions actually sounds more appealing as the werewolf aspect actually seems like it is a nice tribal feel and the character strikes me as more warrior than mage despite likely using more spells than any else.

Fourth- Still looking for that good "Why come to Skyrim?" motivation. The idea of coming to kill someone or something seems cliche. That said maybe fighting undead could factor in but the twist is that the character uses that "ash necromancy" to power his skills which itself is like fighting fire with fire and would definatly turn some heads.

Fifth- Ashlander background for sure. I think either an outcast or the lone survivor of a tribe fits well. A Gulakhan sounds good, a champion and powerful warrior but not a leader or head figure.

Sixth- Still very torn about the character being dragonborn or not...always a tough choice when making a Skyrim character RP/Build.

Seventh and last for now- Perhaps over the course of the playthrough could use mods to "build a new tribe" where you gather characters like Jenassa and Teldryn, Erandur, and other dunmer NPCs and maybe even a non-dunmer clanfriend or two and stick them all into one house mod....maybe hearthfire house, location and RP rebuilding your shattered tribe?

Not sure....again just ideas. Figuring out what kind of alignment would probubly help a lot with some of these ideas to factor in how destructive vs constructive I want to be.

Again I value each and every person's input.

@pestilence I know you have been doing Ashlander stuff lately and would greatly appreciate any input. :)

    Thanks all!

I also like fire spells more than the frost ones to be honest so yeah better go that way. Also in a heavily modded skyrim you can make the fire graphics look amazing.

A few months back I did a fire based battle mage. Only used fire spells and weapons with fiery soul trap / fire damage enchant and "roleplayed" it that whatever he kills with his fire element can be summoned from the dead. I used skeleton summons back then so I like the idea of raising from the ashes.

A thing I used once for one of my characters' backstory was that he was from a family with a long line of assassins and because he hated them for what they were and the things they were doing he turned against them and tried  to assassinate them before his first mission but failed and now he was being chased and came to Skyrim in order to hide and because at some point he heard the rumors of a skilled face sculptor being in the ragged flagon in Riften and going there to change his appearence could help.

    Not sure if that helps.

Hmm being an outcast on the run defiantly sounds popular so far. That type of background might make him more predisposed to things like joining the thieves guild although I don't see the lure of gold having much hold on him. Ash, fire, and necromancy also seems to be going over well. Sounds like maybe I should post some sweet screenshots together with journal entries perhaps as how I share with all of you? Thanks all!
