Oblivion Character Build: The Dark Mage

  • June 10, 2017

Disclaimer: If you are not interested in ridicoulously OP builds, stop reading now.

Disclaimer 2: This is literally just a build there is little to no RP aspect.

Oblivion is, without a doubt, the best Elder Scrolls game, at least in my opinion. I still play it religiously to this day. Oblivion was a game in which you had a lot more freedom than in Skyrim. This build is an example of just how crazy mages could be in this game. This character on my account has an infamy of 607 and a bounty of around 89583563. The aim of this character is to cause as muchg chaos around Cyrodil as possible.

    - The Dark Mage -

Race: Altmer. Altmer have a large boost to magicka which really helps earlier on. I also spent ages editing his face to make him have a massive, creepy smile, huge eyes, and a deathly pale complexion.

Birthsign:The Mage. This birthsign has a decent enough Magicka boost with none of the negatives.

    Class:Dark Mage

    Specialization:Magic

    Attributes: Intelligence, Willpower

Skills:Destruction, Illusion, Restoration, Alteration, Mysticism, Conjuration, Acrobatics

Essential Quests:Mage's Guild, for spellmaking, which is a big part in this build.

Equipment:Arch-Mage's/Heretic Robes (Fortify Intelligence), Gold Trimmed Shoes (Fortify Acrobatics), Arch-Mage's/Heretic Hood (Fortify Intelligence) Spelldrinker Amulet, LOTS of Rings, Mage's Staff of Paralysis

    - Skills -

Destruction: This skill is used in combonation with the 'Infinite Enchantments' glitch (see below). This glitch allows you to raise your Intelligence and/or Willpower so high you can spam your own custom spells with no consequence. I used this skill to kill every non-essential NPC in the game.

Illusion:using the 'Infinite Enchantments' glitch, I created a 100% chameleon spell that was extremely useful in trying to escape massive hordes of guards. AOE paralysis was also very helpful at most times.

Acrobatics: Though not paticularly magical, this skill is heaps of fun when glitched to above 300. There is something extremely satisfying about lesping about the rooves of Cheydinhal while raining down Lightning and Fire down on extremely confused citizens.

Alteration:This skill is used for powerful shield spells; after all, this build is basically a glass bomber plane. A combonation of Burden and Drain Strength can also be quite funny at times.

Restoration:Used to heal yourself in times of need, and cure yourself of Diseases or Poisons.

Mysticism: I used this skill for temporary reflect damage and spells. I love it when you can just stand there as a beggar attempts to punch you to death and then for no apparent reason turn and scream "Assault! Assaulllllllt!"

Conjuration: I always use this skill, even for warrior builds. I simply love summoning Dremora Lords and Xivilai to chase drunkenly after fleeing innocents.

    - Glitches -

    Duplication Glitch

    1) Acquire two or more copies of the same scroll. The number of identical scrolls that you have will determine the number of duplicate items you can create.
    2) Open your inventory.
    3) Highlight the stack of scrolls and select them once.
    4) Highlight (but do not equip) an item (either single or a stack) that you wish to duplicate, and drop it.
    5) Close your inventory and on the floor will be multiple copies of the item that you dropped.

    Permanant Enchantment Glitch:

    1) Duplicate two identical copies of the enchanted item.
    2) Equip one, then try to duplicate the non-equipped one.
    3) The duplication will forcibly remove the equipped copy of the item, and you will be left with the item's enchantment as a permanent effect.

I enchanted my own rings (about 100) with "Fortify Intelligence" and then did the glitch with them in order to gain huge Magicka.

Also, if you want lots of gold to make spells and enchant items without needing to hunt for things to sell:

Dorian Money-Making Glitch (Fixed by Unofficial Oblivion Patch)

    1) Go to "Dorian's House" in the Talos Plaza District.

2 / Optional) Bribe Dorian as much as possible to increase his gold.

3)Paralyse him and then pickpocket him. Take the gold from him. The gold willnever be removed, allowing you to take the gold an infinite amount of times.

    - Custom Spells -

    Electrocution

Lightning Damage x points in x feet. Target. Your go-to damage spell for most situations. As you have a lot of magicka, feel free to make the damage sky-high. I don't really think it is nessacary, however, to put the radius too high.

    Oblivion's Embrace

Fire Damage x points in 50 feet for 5 seconds. Target. This spell is really useful for fighting NPC's (except Dark Elves) and Frost-Based creatures. Not so useful in the Main Quest.

    Frost Nova

Frost Damage x points in 75 feet for 3 seconds. Target. This spell is massively useful for almost all enemies. Frost Damage has a  unique effect where the spell does not need to strike for the AOE to accur; the projective itself is AOE.

    Harry Potter

Chameleon 100 points for 25 seconds on self. This spell is hugely useful, and is better than Invisibility as you can still activate levers and the like without the effect dispelling. Feel free to add a Night-Eye or Light effect along with it.

    Tear Soul

Paralysis for 20 seconds on self. Shield x points for seconds on self. Summon Faded Wraith/Gloom Wraith for 20 seconds on self. Gives the very awesome impression that you have died and your vengeful soul has risen from you.

    Mara's Kiss

Heal self x points for x seconds. A healing spell, nothing fancy. Feel free to add some shield or reflect or cure effects to give a little finessé.

    Face of Terror

Bound Helmet for 5 seconds on self. Demoralise 100 points in 50 feet. Gives the impression that the surrounding enemies have been terrified by your temporary helmet.

    - Combat -

The combat for this build is simple. Simply rain down hell upon all that are stupid enough to face you. Paralyse them, burden them, soul trap them, do anything you can to kill your opponent. Destroy anything and everything.

Decimate every city, every village, every ruin. Everything must die.

    Closing Notes:

I realise many people will dislike this build because of the simple and overpowered nature of it. There is basically no RP involved. However, some people may like the build, I don't know. Anyway, thank you for reading and have a good life :D

Builds like this one make me feel bad that I just can't get to enjoy Oblivion. Damn you Skyrim!

Heh, this is a really good showcase of what makes Oblivion awesome, just absolutely abusing the game so that you've got a character that doesn't even understand the concept of having challenges. :D

Great build Script-Maker, it's always good to see someone posting Classic Builds

It's not often that someone posts a Classics build without being driven by an event so it's well deserved!

Oblivion is, without a doubt, the best Elder Scrolls game

    What blasphemy is this!?

But seriously man, this is a really wonderful Build! I normally always stick to RP in Oblivion, so I think I might just have to give this a try next time I play.

I hope you plan on sticking around for while. I'd like to see those other Builds you have planned!

    Ahahah, blasphemy is right :)
