Why You Should Play the Classics

  • August 27, 2015

I'm with Karver here. One of the biggest draws for me when it comes to playing Oblivion is that it's vibrant. In Skyrim, everything is falling  apart and it's all dark and grim, while Oblivion is just so colourful. I like the vanilla graphics, even today (with a major exception being beast race face)

You two need to stop. I've got to go back to work tonight but all I really want to do is play Oblivion.

I just read the Song of Pelinal again and miss the Imperial Province.

DO IT! You know you want to! Give in to the temptation! Join the Dark Side, Phil! You can kill save the Emperor!

I personally think that Oblivion is the best game, altough the third person camera could be a thousand times better. I love it that you're not the hero and I absolutely enjoy walking through Cyrodiil with Martin Septim.

Ah, pretty sure I've commented here before but you can never sing the praises for Oblivion and Morrowind too much. What Oblivion does better than anyone else (and this is often looked over) is make the most amazing cities in all of Tamriel. Even without mods, there is nothing that beats the experience of having a city as large as the Imperial City, it's just an amazingly designed place, and the other cities are a lot better than say...the more dull cities of Skyrim.

But since I briefly mentioned it, I have to give an extra shout out to the sheer number of amazing mods for Oblivion and Morrowind. Skyrim is definitely pretty close but for me I think you just can't compare to these mods that have been out there for, you know 8+ years, possibly going through multiple different groups, etc. Some of those mods are just so massive on scale that you really can't compete with them.

I've probably commented here too, but I've since dug a lot deeper into the Classics, so I'll give my thoughts again.

Morrowind's without a doubt my favorite of not just the Classics, but the series as a whole. It's got a ton of places to explore, loads of quests, diverse landscapes, and a whole lot more. For some reason, I've never been able to get into Oblivion as much, but it's still amazingly fun. Even the graphics aren't that bad, heads aside.

And Dragonorn, that bit about Oblivion's cities is spot on! And if I might add onto it, Morrowind, too, has some great (And large) cities, much more populated than Skyrim's. Solitude has, what, about 80 NPCs? Well, Vivec's got over 300. Not to mention that Dunmer are (Apparently) not as racist as the Nords, thus you'll find a lot more Khajiit and Orcs in towns (*cough* slaves...).

As for mods, I haven't downloaded a lot for Oblivion (I'm a console player at heart), but Morrowind's just got an absolutely amazing selection. One of my personal favorites is Wyrmhaven, by Neoptolemus. It might not be the biggest, but it's packed full of new and interesting content, and is just wonderfully well-made. And just last year Ashstaar released The Doors of Oblivion, which adds the various Daedric Relams to the game.

If I could, I'd spend an eternity playing these games!

I did not play Arena or Daggerfall but Morrowind is the best of the series that I have played not only is it massive but the main story questline is the best bar none for me, no Morrowind wasn't easy to play the lack of combat ability in the early stages was a bloody pain and put a lot of people off, not me though i persevered and enjoyed it immensely to such an extent that I played it to exhaustion.  Oblivion was great too not on a par with Morrowind but an enjoyable game.

We should play the classics for all sorts of reasons, completing our knowledge of Lore, or to compare various weapon and Armour types or for whatever reason, after all these years I still play Morrowind and Oblivion and shall continue to do so, great post mate.

I loved Arena.  I have very fond memories of it but it's hard to play now as it's ancient..lol.  But I did love it.

Sadly, the next few releases really burned me.  I bought them all (except Redguard, the only one I haven't at least tried).  Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion all sat on my shelf for at least a year until I was able to upgrade my computers.

I remember putting Daggerfall in finally, after almost TWO YEARS and I couldn't get out of the first starting dungeon and the maps were horrible (to me).  Never played it again.  Morrowind I got into finally, after almost two years (new computer #2 for a Bethesda game) and then Oblivion came out.  This time I wasn't as far behind the tech curve and was able to get away with some upgrades instead of a whole computer.  When I heard Skyrim was coming out I just went ahead and popped for a new cpu (#3 new system for Bethesda).

Jeez, I may have to go back and play again with mods. Just afraid of having to relearn everything from Skyrim (combat etc) and I never really knew about how to assign skills/perks before Skyrim when I got into CB.

Urgh... Yeah, Oblivion's gameplay was kind of horrible in that matter (The actual combat was amazing), levelling up was just a pain in the ass because of how the system was designed. I don't have much experience with the idea, I mean I did kind of grow up on Oblivion and Morrowind, but Oblivion XP might work better for you. Basically it changes the game so that it runs off of experience (For fighting, unlocking chests, etc.) instead of the weird skill system from Oblivion. I don't quite recall whether or not the mod changes the whole attribute thing, but you could download a mod that just lets you boost it by 5 everytime.

Together those two mods would totally change the way Oblivion's kind of terrible levelling up. Might make it easier for you if you never really managed to get into.
