Let's Guide: Adventurer's Guide to Cyrodiil

  • May 10, 2015

Hey, people, Karver here with new content for you. This might be a strange one, but I hope this could help people enjoy Oblivion more. So what's this about? Well, we all know that Oblivion has awesome quest lines and some interesting side quests. But there isn't enough of them. This is where Morrowind and Skyrim fare better. But if you know what roleplay means, there is possibility to even the odds.

I was thinking about writing this myself like a guide, but then I realized it might be too much for me to chew on, so I'm turning on you people. Tell us what are your roleplay adventures in the land of Cyrodiil? What have you been doing to keep yourself ocupied?

I'll start with some idea of my own and I hope that in time we can turn this discussion into something helpful and interesting for other people to read.

Hunter – Simple as that, hunting animals in the wilds for the pelts and meat to sell it in the town. It will earn you few septims to buy you some ale to warm your stomach.

Sewers Cleaner - Right below Imperial City is vast system of sewers that is swarming with creatures and other dangerous things. What if those creature came to surface? Imperial City might need some saving...from below.

Collector – I connected this roleplay directly with the quest Collector. It is pretty much about exploring every possible Ayleid ruin you come accross looking for some kind of weird statues. Well, the loot you can find there is worth something too.

Bounty Hunter – The game actually gives you the option to collect bounties for Black Bows if you join Knights of the White Stallion, but I think you can do better than hunting one group of bandits in the south of Cyrodiil. Clearing the wilds from highwaymen and collecting one piece of their gear they have common gives this kind of "collecting heads" feeling.

Goblin Hunter – Cyrodiil actually feels little overrun by this vermin, so clearing them out for some money isn't the worse idea adventurer can have. Collect Goblin's shields as a prove that you did your job.

Stone Finder – This one was hard one for me few years back. It is pretty much about searching for the Doomstones and Runestones in the Cyrodiil. Reward isn't that great, but because you actually find them, next time you will be looking for them, you won't need to head to UESP to know where they are.

Ingredients Gathering - This one is Phil's idea and I think it is a great one. Gathering ingredients as a adventurer hired to do so and sell them to a apothecary sounds good. Also you can be a alchemist looking for ingredients to create your own potions. I believe that this can be combined with the Nirnroot quest quite well.

Pilgrimage - Another Phil's idea. If you are knight, monk or cleric, this is roleplay you should follow. Venturing across the Tamriel to visit shrines of the Nine Divines either to repent you crimes or just to honour your gods is worthy path.

    The Gatekeeper
    - Well, you won't be guarding any gate, quite the opposite. This is about looking for Oblivion Gates in the wilds and closing every single one of them. The Sigil Stones are really worth it.

The City Guard by Chris Diokno - "Put on a suit of chainmail, cuirass of the city, and patrol around the area surrounding it. Do any law abiding quests, stay outside the Count's door, etc"

The Scavenger by Chris Diokno - "Bring along along a follower as backup. Explore any ruins or caves, maybe get a horse. Rob dead people from their valuables. Sell items to the correct vendor, keep their stocks in supply, Like, say, sell armor (Drop it into water first, gotta get rid of the mud or blood), to a blacksmith or armor salesman, like The Best Defence, or sell robes and whatnot to Rindair's staves."

The Cartographer/Scout by Teineeva: Explore the wilds of Cyrodiil, no dungeon delving just the above ground spaces, try to find interesting places that may be of interest for your contractor. for example Ayleid ruins for the local mages guild, goblin caves for the fighter's guild, and bandit hideouts for the local city guards. It is recommanded to turn off the compass and to use mods like unique landscapes.

Oblivion Walker by Tim - Completing tasks for all Daedric Princes holds many rewards, but it can also keep you nicely occupied. Also completing all of them gives you the opportunity to gain the knowledge of Oghma Infinium.

Gladiator - Easy. Fight in the Arena. But have you ever tried to just live as a Gladiator? I mean, what gladiator was ever able to fight five fights in the arena and still stand? What I did was to restrict myself to one fight a day. Suddenly, you have to live through the day only with the gold you win. This is great opportunity for you to actually live in Imperial City, get to know it´s citizens and complete quests you stumble upon.

So tell me about your roleplay?

Also, UESP has page with some ideas, so if haven't found what you were looking for here, you might wanna head there. UESP Roleplaying Ideas

Just another thought on that Ayleid Statue quest, it's been a while but wasn't some parts of the quest an homage to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc? Man, I need to play that quest again, because Ayleids!

The City Guard-Put on a suit of chainmail, and the cuirass of the city, and patrol around the area surrounding it. Do any law abiding quests, stay outside the Count's door, etc

The problem with this is that there isn´t any crime happening in cities. But I like your way of thinking in patroling. I´ll copy-paste your comment right into the discussion.

    Thanks, Chris.

Not sure what you mean, Phil. You mean that you can *spoilers* trick Umbacano to equip the wrong helmet and die a horrible death? *end of spoiler*

It's Indie's rival archaeologist Belloq who says:

Dr. Jones. Again we see there is nothing you can possess which I cannot take away.

In the Ayleid Statue quest, called "Nothing you can Possess", Claude Marric, Breton to Belloq's French, is the one demanding a relic be turned over on threat of violence.

Oh. I forgot that one. And I certainly didn´t know it was reference to Indiana Jones. I´ll have to play through that quest again. Maybe with an argonian thief?

Ayleid ruins are actually pretty good places for Heists. Kind of.

Let's see, what else. Ah! The Wandering Supplier since, unless you're on PC you can't claim a shop as your own and sell your wares there, you instead wander the countryside. Bring along along a follower as backup. Explore any ruins or caves, maybe get a horse. Sell items to the correct vendor, keep their stocks in supply, Like, say, sell armor (Drop it into water first, gotta get rid of the mud or blood), to a blacksmith or armor salesman, like The Best Defence, or sell robes and whatnot to Rindair's staves

    Scavenger might sound better, eh?
