SotF: On Soldiers of Fortune

  • When a mercenary party grows large enough, these mercenaries are then organised into free companies, named so as they act independentlyfrom the Empire. Like their individual counterparts, the quality and the reputation of free companies vary from disciplined and honourable to thuggish and unreliable. Free companies however are not mercenary armies and instead function more as an administrative body to organise and acquire work for individual mercenaries and small-scale operations. While some free companies do have the numbers to actually field armies, the existence of the standing, professional force that is the Imperial Legion has rendered the need for mercenary armies irrelevant.
