Kothringi Application - Prisoner

I found some work today on a ship! Getting paid to sail across the seas, watching the prow slice through the water... It seems a pretty good deal to me. It's not much pay, mind. I'll be a deckhand in essence, though I will get paid a little more for my sword arm. I'll be working on a merchant ship, and such trading vessels must always be wary for pirates. If we run across any, I'll be expected to fight them, along with the other warriors on board. Really though, I doubt that we'd stand much of a chance if we were to run into pirates. Looking around the ship today, I saw very little in the form of armaments. There's two cannon, one on either side, but the chances of beating anything much with that are quite slim. Myself and the other warriors might be able to win against a pirate boarding party, but I expect most of these things are won before any pirates come aboard. In any case, I'm happy to take the risk. After all, where's the fun in an entirely safe venture?

I've convinced Jirat to join up with me, and Captain Zarn has given him work as a deckhand. So I'll have the company of a friend now, too. Mother found out about my voyage, and has been doing her level best to dissuade me from going. Father and his ship's disappearance is still fresh in her mind. I've tried to explain to her that there's nothing she can say to change my mind, but she won't listen. There's nothing anyone can do to change my mind.

Captain Zarn says we're leaving on the 19th, heading to the isle of Harte, and from there, to Protteas. I can't wait! It'll be my first time out to sea since Father went missing. Mother is becoming increasingly stressed, and her attempts to convince me to stay away from the sea have become more and more desperate. She doesn't understand. I was born for the sea. I have to take this job.

I'm not packing much for the trip. Some clothes, money, a good book or two and my equipment is all I need. I don't really see the point of all the trinkets and other miscellaneous items people tend to bring when they travel. While I wait for us to depart, I've been researching the islands we'll be visiting. I found that Protteas is apparently the first island the Crimson Ship landed on, and it's where the fabled Tanik discovered the cure for the Knahaten Flu that our people were stricken with when we first arrived. Of course, the story of the Tanik and the Crimson ship is most likely more of a legend than a factual account, but it's interesting to look into the folklore none the less. I talked to Mother again. Thankfully, she has resigned herself to the fact that I'm going out to sea and there's nothing she can do about it. I've done my best to assure her I'm going to be fine, but she is still worried. I suppose that's a mother's job though, really.

We're finally at sea! Captain Zarn has been giving Jirat and I a lot of things to do, and I've been very busy. I'm enjoying it though, and I think Jirat is too. I missed the way ships rock back and forth... Damnit, Zarn's calling me, I best respond quickly. I'll try to write another entry when I have more time.

    28th of Sunwake, 1205

The Captain has given me some time to write an entry, so I can talk about what's been happening. I've become friends with the ship's navigator, Dirki, who's very interested in the ancient continent of Tamriel, from which we Kothringi supposedly originated. He believes that Protteas is the closest island to Tamriel that we have colonised, and is interested in mounting an exploration trip from there, in search of the fabled continent. Of course, Captain Zarn isn't allowing at, as there's no profit to be had in an exploration mission, especially since all such trips in the past have failed, so Dirki is planning to buy a ship of his own in Protteas some day, and try to find Tamriel himself. Jirat thinks it's all just nonsense, but I'm not so sure.

Well, we made it to Harte. It was a pretty uneventful trip, but Harte is very interesting. The architecture is quite different to that of home. The buildings are all rectangular, as opposed to the curvy designs I'm used to. They also make much more use of stone. I suppose it's easy to build with if you're making a rectangular structure. Jirat has been to Harte before, and is taking me on a tour. We're leaving in a few days, but Jirat says that's plenty of time to see all there is to see.

    18th of Nature's Bounty, 1205

I'm back out at sea again. I must say, all the right angles of Harte get boring after a while, and there wasn't all that much there in the way of attractions. Jirat lost his silver pendant while we were there, and he got very worked up about it. After I helped him find it, he finally told me about why it's so important to him. Apparently it was a gift from his mother, a short while before she died of disease. He keeps it with him to remember he by. I guess we all have to deal with grief one way or another.

    Nature's Bounty, 1205

This may be my last entry. By the gods, it all happened so fast. We were nearing Protteas when the storm struck. It was during the night the Captain's first mate woke me up and told me all hands were needed on deck. The ship was rocking wildly, and it was difficult to keep my footing, but I made it onto the deck. The next few moments are a blur, Zarn shouting orders, working with Jirat to try and keep the ship from capsizing or breaking apart. Then a huge wave broke on the boat, and sailors were sent flying overboard. I was able to keep my grip but Jirat... I grabbed his pendant to try and stop his fall, but the chain got ripped right off his neck and he fell into the sea. With no sign of the Captain, it was every man for themselves. Somehow, I made it onto an escape raft, and it's from there that I'm writing. My name is Kareat and I'm 20 years old, and I'm going to die...

My name's Erik, and I just fished this journal and it's owner out of the water. I don't know whether this thing is the scratchings of a madman or if there is some kind of society out there over the sea, but I've never seen anything like this guy before. He's got completely silver skin. I'm going to see if I can wake him up.
