His Ruby Eye - A Skyrim Snippet

  • For Bilbo

    (Written 2/11/11)

Swift as the wind you move through the trees, the small cloth sack bouncing against your back a reminder of why you must move as quickly away from the town as you can. Your success gives you and extra boost of speed to your already incredible pace; soon you will be well clear of any danger and decide to make camp. That night you camp up in a tree far safer than anything to be built on the ground. The lush pines surrounding you, the closeness of the sky and the sound of the insects as they come out to play all bring back memories of your time in your homeland of Valenwood.

You awake with the dawn the next morning to another cloudless sky. It is your lucky day you think as you scramble down from the tree tops with all the deftness of a cat. Soon you are on the move again and covering the miles nicely when suddenly you spot smoke rising above the tree line. Slinking into a crouch you creep forward and soon come upon a cave with smoke bellowing out of the entrance. Intrigued you move closer, the more you advance the thicker the smoke gets til you are right at the entrance. It is nearly impossible to see and you don’t want to risk an injury just to check out a smoky cave when, just as you are about to leave you spy a glinting light just a few feet away, cautiously you creep closer. For a brief moment the smoke abates and your eyes widen at the small pile of Septims there is more gold there then what your entire sack is worth, eagerly you dump the contents of your bag and start scooping up the coins. Scouring the surrounding grounds you can’t believe your luck more gold coins and several silver and gold trinkets are strewn across the floor. Quickly you gather everything in your sight no longer noticing that the smoke has long since disappeared.

The further into the cavern you walk the grander and shiner the treasures become soon you are burden with all you can carry though you long to take much, much more. Glancing around the floor once more you finally give in to the tremendous weight upon your shoulders and decided to head out. Looking up for the first time you suddenly take in your surroundings. You find yourself in an enormous cavern every inch of the walls in richly carved with what looks like warriors fighting each other and a larger than life depiction of one warrior holding a shield against a towering inferno of flames. Amazed you momentarily forget about your treasures, letting the bag slip to the ground with a loud echoing clank you approach the wall drinking in all the details as though you can’t get enough. It takes you a few minutes to finally decipher what you are seeing.

A dragon, a dragon is craved into the wall; the detail so rich you swear for a moment it was alive. Shaking your head you turn to leave when out of the corner of your eye you spot the tell-tale glitter of a gem. You really should leave it be your bag is already fit to bursting and you have such a long way still to travel. But the thief in you craves the shiny all the more for your resistance to it. Cursing your lack of will power you lower your sack to the ground once more and using the quick reflexes for climbing thin bark stacks you were taught as a child in Valenwood make short work of the craving on the wall. The many flames and scales of the dragon making it almost child’s play and you soon reach the Dragon’s head the gem nestled just above its eye. Lifting yourself up you stretch out your hand, your face has just come level with the huge cat-slit eye of the craved beast when the stone brings to crumble. You manage to find hand holds and ride out the tremor though it felts as though the craving is falling away from the wall you pray that that isn’t so as you continue to hold a death vice to the stone. Eventually the shaking stops, you should really just climb down now and forget the gem you think to yourself but you are so close and that gem is awfully pretty, decision made you reach out once more, and then the eye blinks at you…

Awesome, Charlie...and it also captures my mindset when I am playing, scouring the ground and walls for shiny things in order not to miss anything, but then of course, missing the really big dangerous thing!
