Glimpses - The Pyromaniac of Valenwood

It was peaceful, the only noise that echoed throughout the forest was that of wildlife and theĀ rustleĀ of the trees bending in the soft breeze. By a tree knelt a boy, dressed in a black robe, with humble tattered rope around his waist. Small, skinny with rather dark skin for a Bosmer. Raising his hands toward his face a flicker of light passed between them. He stands, glances upwards towards the waving sea of green and brown at the top of the tree, a glint in theĀ child'sĀ eyes and then a flash of light; the tree is ablaze with a roaring fire, the child dashes away frantically.

Erathor stands in line bow in hand, with the other children. His father, one of the elders, possessed knack hunting matched by no one as far as legs could take you. Erathors father was regularly looked at to teach the young how to hunt, and now Erathors day had come. The tallest and most muscular of the bosmeri youth steps forward and lets loose an arrow straight and true into a target which stood 100 metres away. Erathor steps forward. He draws his bow, his arm shaking frantically, but with a ferocious determination glazing his eyes. He lets go and his arrow wobbles off and lands at his fathers feet, his shoulders hang low and loud sigh escapes him. The rest of the children laugh as he drops the bow and wanders off into the wilderness. His father shakes his head then walks to praise the other children for their marksmanship.

It had been 20 years since Erathors parents had perished in a tragic fire which tore through their home, since then he had wandered between settlements in Valenwood abiding by the Greenpact, but in secret practising the manipulation of fire.Ā

Erathor settled eventually into a small friendly community. All those years alone had turned him into something of a hermit, something he did not betray, even when he settled. The locals didn't bother him much; he was left alone to practise his art. Until one day a rather nosey elder wandered up to Erathors home, inviting him to enjoy merriments with some of the other families, Erathor however was in the middle of his training and was surrounded by swirling flames. He proceeded to spout flames at the elderly elf roasting him to his death, in a moment of panic yet sadistic enjoyment; Erathor jumped from his home and set forth a giant swirling tower of fire, incinerating the other houses and brutally murdering all who dwelled within.

Dawn came and Erathor sat in the middle of the remains, embers still flickering, he enjoyed it, his power revealed, even to himself. Had he been stricken down for betraying the pact and murdering its followers? Where was the protection Jephre offered his children?

He stood, the wind blew swirls of ash past him. It occurred to him, the green pact must have been created to restrict the powers within Bosmer, keeping them primitive. Walking away Erathor vowed to refine his powers. He had heard of a college in the far reaches of Tamriel where Men and Mer refined the arcane arts. He set out to attend, and eventually one day return to this place and teach his bretherin to harness their power and mercilessly reclaim the fear they had once commanded before the days of the green pact.

Hey Shimazu, just so you know, when you edit your post be sure to maintain the date of posting to what it was before and not change it to "post now". This will keep your post from being unfairly bumped.

This was awesome and eerie, Shimazu...the portrait of a sociopath in the making! Ā Excellent twist on the Green Pact and completely unexpected Bosmer character! Ā Great job!

Yeah the unorthodoxy was really the main point of the back-story ! Well that and the twisted unguided views of a maniac :)
