Danifae looked through the sight on the crossbow and fired into the tree trunk. She was starting to like this weapon very much. When the four companions had approached Fort Dawnguard and saw Durak using one, Danifae had shown a great interest in what Durak was doing. Durak had given her a spare crossbow and shown her how to load bolts and fire it. She had quickly gotten used to using it, no thanks in part to her knowing how to shoot a normal bow but the crossbow had a sight which was definitely a plus point for Danifae, due to her being blind in her right eye. Not that she let anyone know. Luckily the face changer had given her a false eye to match her other one. It was purely cosmetic, but her blindness affected her aiming with a normal bow.
Durak was impressed with her progress.
Durak 'You use that like you've handled one before. You're certainly Dawnguard material if you continue like that'
Danifae 'My use of a normal bow helps with aiming but I need to get used to the recoil. I do like this though'
Durak 'Just remember they're heavy and powerful but slow to reload. They're also quite short range so not good for long distances'
Danifae 'I will. I can use my normal bow for long distances if I need to. May I keep this crossbow and the bolts?'
Durak 'By all means. We have plenty spare and can make more if we need to. You're ready to go and see Isran'
So the party went into the main keep and finally met Isran, a gruff ex-member of the Vigilants, who had tired of their ways and decided to take the fight to the vampires himself. After introducing themselves, Isran told them of mysterious vampire activity at Dimhollow Crypt and would like the new recruits to go and check it out as soon as they could. Danifae said that they'd be happy to and in the meantime they had some food and rest and they checked out the rest of the keep. The place was rather empty of people and Isran was hopeful that more recruits would come and join later.
So, the party mounted up again and left the keep. They had actually been recruited to kill a dragon by the Jarl in Riften and its lair was nearby so they dismounted a short way away from where it was sleeping. Danifae sneaked up as near as she dared, loaded her crossbow and let fire. It hit true and the beast roared in pain and took off. It flew about for a bit, trying to freeze the party with its frost attack but they had scattered and whilst Larkspur and Danifae shot at it with arrows and bolts waiting for it to land, Lydia and Zora waited behind some rocks until it landed then the two of them attacked it from both ends whilst Larskspur and Danifae continued shooting at it. It eventually grew too weak to fly and when the four of them attacked it with their various weapons it died and Danifae absorbed its soul. Doing this still sent a shiver down her spine but at least that was another dragon which wouldn't be coming back. Danifae raided its skeleton for bones and some gems, which she could sell.
Danifae 'Yes this crossbow is very effective for taking down dragons. The bolts penetrate its armour quite effectively'
Larkspur 'Yes so I noticed. That thing was peppered with your bolts and my arrows didn't penetrate so much'
Danifae 'Are you jealous of my weapon?' she said, with a smile and a wink
Larkspur 'Oh most definitely. You'll need to teach me how to use it sometime'
Danifae 'Now won't that be fun'
