Lutherus Sotasius - Chapter VI, Part I

  • ORIENTATION
From the Journal of Lutherus Sotasius. Date of Entry: Heartfire, 5th, 4E, 201.

After a hearty breakfast provided by the College, Lutherus took to exploring and finding his way around the grounds as many of the other students did as well. Leaving the Hall of Attainment, Lutherus returned to the Hall of the Elements, and made his way up the winding staircase to the quiet study area. Nothing was of real interest to Lutherus up here though, it was practically absent. "At least I can study in peace up here." He thought to himself as he returned back downstairs. Speaking of studies, Lutherus thought it'd be a good idea to find Lecturer Neloren, Head of Illusion. In looking for his lecturer, he stumbled upon the Arcaneum, The College Library. There he met Urag Gro-Shub, the elderly Librarian.

"Excuse me." Asked Lutherus to the Librarian. "I'm looking for Lecturer Neloren."

"So?" Snapped Urag, as he carefully turned the pages of an ancient book. "Can't you see I'm busy? Go bother somebody else."

"Oh...sorry." Said Lutherus, as he walked away. Urag rolled his eyes and returned to his book.

"Don't mind him." Came a voice, to which Lutherus turned to face. "He's just very protective over his Arcaneum. Don't take it personally."

"I can sure appreciate that." Replied Lutherus to the Nord student.

"You were looking for Drevis, right? He's in the Astrology Room. Look for the Dunmer with red eyes and white hair."

"Oh, thank you!" Replied Lutherus gratefully, and proceeded there.

He found a single Dunmer with white hair, thumbing through a book of some sorts whilst surrounded by portrayals of Mundus as well as several intricate skeletons of various extinct species, carefully placed on a shelf. Lutherus walked over to the Dunmer. "Excuse me. Are you Lecturer Neloren?"

The Dunmer turned around, facing Lutherus. "Indeed! OH Damn! You can see me?"

"Well, yes. Of course I can." Came the bewildered response by Lutherus.

"Blast! I thought I had that Invisibilty recipe down to a tee! I'm sorry lad, I'm Drevis, Drevis Neloren. Who might you be?"

"Lutherus Sotasius. I intend to take your lectures in the School of Illusion."

"Ahh. A fellow Illusionist are we? You are aware my Orientation doesn't start until this afternoon right?"

"I just wanted to come to you so I can know where I need to go for then."

"Ah, of course. Well, I'll be holding Orientation here, in this room. Is that all?"

    "Indeed, thank you."

"Alright then." Finished Drevis, as he returned to his reading. Lutherus left the Arcaneum, keen on killing the time he had. He considered it a good idea to join some of the students, who had returned to the Student's Quarter and try to make friends with them.

"What's your name?" Came a familiar voice. Lutherus acknowledged it coming from the same student before in the Arcaneum.

"Lutherus." He replied with an extended hand. "Lutherus Sotasius. Sorry, I didn't catch your name earlier?"

"Heh, that's quite alright." Replied the Nord, extending his own hand to shake Lutherus'. "Name's Onmund."

Lutherus smiled. "It's good to meet your proper acquaintance finally. What are you studing here at the College?"

    "Destruction Magi, primarily. And you?"

"Illusion. I'm considering applying for Scribe Literation later as well."

"Oh really? Might I come with you? I haven't quite made up my mind yet as to what other extra curriculum I want to perform her."

"Certainly! Was there any other activities on your mind, Onmund?"

"Enchantment seems pretty interesting. Though, I've only dabbled in it on occasion."

"Enchantment is fine by me! I wouldn't mind joining you. Shall we both go after Orientation this afternoon?"

"That sounds very hospitable. Thanks, Imperial!" Smiled Onmund. "Anyway, I must get my room in order. See you after Orientation."

"Yes, I'll come find you." Replied Lutherus, as he left on his continued navigation around the College. Nothing of real interest happened during his remaining free time and by 12:45pm, Lutherus had made his way back to the Astrology Room, to find several other students remaining.

But yet there was no sign of Lecturer Neloren. The students grew concerned and anxious that their Lecturer hadn't arrived at the according time. Were they in the wrong place? Had the Orientation been cancelled? Concerned glances passed by each student as they were unsure whether to stay and wait or just leave, as they had already waited 10 minutes now. Then, suddenly to everyone's surprise the Lecturer materialised in front of them. "Invisibility, such a fantastic ice breaker!" He chuckled to his students. "Thank you all for earning my confidence in your patience, too. If there is anything the practice of Illusion based Magicka requires in bucket loads - it is patience. I won't lie to you, when I was a mere Apprentice like you many years ago, there was nothing more that I hated than practising Illusion. You will find the work less 'admirable' than the Restoration practice, and less 'awesome' than the firepower that layeth within Destruction. You will find yourself in the Arcaneum Library for longer, with endless supply of reading to slug through. But take it from me, it will pay off eventually. If you put in the hours needed to dedicate to honing your already practical skills, you will find yourselves able to bend the will of those around you, without even lifting a finger. You can command the obedience of man, animal, the undead and even constructs to your willing." The Lecturer's introductory speech captivated his present students, Lutherus himself found the possibilities of his studies with immense interest. "I look at you all and I see potential, massive potential. But there is only so much I can teach you. In a very realistic sense, 10% of what you will learn here will be through me. The rest, through your own curiousity." Lecturer Neloren noticed Lutherus raise his hand. "Yes, you lad?"

"Sir, are we going to be demonstrating our current skills today?" He asked with interest.

"Glad you asked. As a matter of fact, yes you will have a chance to demonstrate your capabilities. Tolfdir has arrange a Field Trip of some sorts to Saarthal, an ancient site in which the College is current excavating for precious artefacts. Tolfdir has elected that this will serve a perfect time and place for you to exemplify your skills and capabilities."

"When do we leave for Saarthal?" Asked another student.

"When we're done here." Replied the Lecturer. "Before I dismiss you all, I must reiterate what Tolfdir told you earlier regarding extra curricular activities. Please don't be shy of using the workshops here. You may find it benefits you more to direct your studies to actual application rather than just reading. Just remember to not over burden yourself. Thank you all for coming and I wish you the best of luck in your studies." He finished, as the students filtered out. Lutherus, remembering Onmund's arrangement went to go find him, yet he was nowhere to be found. Thinking he may of already headed to Saarthal and simply forgot to tell him, Lutherus decided to grab some food from the Student's Quarter and make for Saarthal as well.

"Excuse me. Are you, going to Saarthal?" Came a voice from behind as he descended the stairwell.

"I am yes. Are you coming too?" Replied Lutherus, noticing the Bosmer's Staff.

"Yeah. I don't really know many people here so would it be okay if I come with you?"

"Of course it is! Hey, what's your name?" Asked Lutherus, offering the Bosmer his hand.

    "Alinstein. Yours?"

"Lutherus." He said, as the two shook hands. "Come on, lets not keep Tolfdir and the rest waiting." The two left the College grounds upon recieving instruction on how to get to Saarthal. It wasn't at all far from the College making the journey incredibly convenient for the two. "That's a pretty fine Staff you have there." Lutherus mentioned as the two walked.

"Thanks! Made it myself during my first year at the College."

    "Oh? Your a Senior?"

"No, I had to repeat the year owing to commitments I had to address in Windhelm. Had to pay the entrance fee twice! Good thing my parents are incredibly wealthy, heh."

Lutherus nodded, as he led the walk to Saarthal. Being a practiced Illusionist, Lutherus made the journey considerably easier by once again diving into his mind's archive. Inside, he envisioned the journey to Saarthal as if he were already there and concentrated the path envisioned to reality. The path before Lutherus and Alinstein illuminated, providing the route to Tolfdir.
