Lutherus Sotasius - Chapter II, Part V

  • THE BANDIT INFORMANT

From the Journal of Lutherus Sotasius. Date of Entry: Last Seed, 22nd, 4E, 201.

Lutherus arrived at the village of Rorikstead, a small, dainty village on the outskirts of Whiterun Hold. He made shelter at the Frostfruit Inn, the village tavern, and after penning his latest journal entry made for the tavern keeper Mralki at the bar.

"Morning stranger." Said Mralki to Lutherus. "Not seen your face around here, lad. You need a room for the day?"

"No." Replied Lutherus. "I'm here for a man named Lemkil. I was told he was living in this village."

"Well." Remarked Mralki, concerned over Lutherus' intentions. "Privacy of my customers is a high price to ignore, stranger. Let's say...200 Septim?" Mralki smirked. Lutherus sighed.

"Fine." Lutherus said, handing over a purse of 200 gold. "Now, where is he?"

"He's one of the farm owners in this village. If he's no longer tending the morning crops, he'll be at his house, adjacent to his farm." Answered Mralki. Lutherus nodded, and left the tavern. Armed with the new information, Lutherus headed to the farmsteads, just outside of Rorikstead. There were two distinct farms within the village, one had a female, and a younger male tending. The other, was tended by a single man, Lutherus' on a complete hunch, approached the single man first. But upon approaching him, he noticed a much older man, tending to some crops in the field, hidden previously behind the building opposite. Unphased, Lutherus approached the younger man. "Excuse me." Said Lutherus, to the younger man, who proceeded to stop tilling the land and look up to Lutherus.

    "Yes?" He replied.

    "Are you Lemkil?"

"He isn't. But, I am." Came a voice from behind Lutherus, which came from the older man. Lutherus turned to face him. "There a problem here, boy?"

"I've heard you've given Farkas in Whiterun quite the headache. I'm here to make sure you don't do it again."

Lemkil, the older man laughed. "Hahaha! That young whippersnapper has no spine! Did he seriously send some jumped up snot nosed kid to do his work? Piss off, lad." Replied Lemkil, as he continued his labor.

"I am under strict orders not to leave Rorikstead until you've learnt your lesson. One way or another, you will be taught."

"Okay kid. Now, you're really starting to rattle my nerves. Get the fuck off of my farm. And tell that pansy Farkas that if he wants to resolve this, he should drag his cowardly ass down here." Replied Lemkil, as he returned to tilling the land. He was just about to scoop some more earth with his Hoe, when Lutherus grabbed it from him, and threw it out of reach. "What the hell is your damn problem, boy?!" Shouted Lemkil, shoving Lutherus in the process. "Piss off!" Lutherus countered by shoving Lemkil back. Before both knew it, they were at each other with fists.

"Lemkil!" Shouted the younger farmhand. "I'll go get help! Guards! GUARDS!" He yelled, running to find help. Lutherus and Lemkil were at each other like wild dogs. Blood spewed from each other as each swing connected. Lutherus fought on, determined to force Lemkil, the accused troublemaker into submission. He soon found his opportunity, Lemkil moved in to throw a king hit Lutherus' way, but missed. Lutherus countered by delivering a quick three hits to his face, doubling over Lemkil.

Lutherus stood over his beaten foe, who was desperate to catch his breath. "Had enough?!" Lutherus demanded between breaths, with the shouts of Guards in the near distance.

"Damn! Fine! Here! Take it!" Said Lemkil, to Lutherus' surprise. He wasn't counting on extorting something out of him.

"What is thi-" Lutherus said, but was cut off in shock at what he saw. Lemkil handed him a piece of folded parchment. On the parchment was a scribbled map of Riverwood, In the exact same places as seen in the map scavenged from Redoran's Retreat, were markings in the exact same places.

"Divines...you're a damn-" Lutherus was cut off again, this time by a Whiterun Guard, tackling him to the floor whilst another tended to the aid of Lemkil.

"You are under arrest lad!" Said the guard, as he fixed his hands in bindings. "Skorngar! Fetch me a wagon! This filth is going to the Dragonsreach Dungeon!" Said the Guard to his colleague, as he punched Lutherus in the back of his head, knocking him out in the process.

When he did finally come to, Lutherus found himself in a dark, smelly jail cell. His inventory including his Armor, Shoes and weapons were all confiscated from him, not even the books he had with him were given as privilege. On his 6th day of staying in the rotten cell a Guard approached, unlocking the door. "Get up, Imperial." Said the Guard. "Someone posted your bail. You're free to go." Lutherus collected his items, and was escorted from the cell. "If we catch you rough housing again, you'll be their longer!" Warned the Guard, as he locked the door to the Dungeon behind him.

"I wonder who posted my bail." Pondered Lutherus to himself. It was early morning, and almost a whole week had passed since his arrest. "My goodness, Riverwood!" He said to himself, as he walked through Whiterun. "I must get back there as soon as I can, it's still in danger! It could be overrun by this point!"

Panicked, he ran to Jorrvaskr to debrief Farkas, and to hopefully rally the men to defend Riverwood, if it wasn't already too late. "So Lemkil was a Bandit Informant? Huh, figures." Said Farkas, upon given the debriefing by Lutherus. "Thanks for this, Lutherus. You've done the Companions a great service. And I'm sorry you got arrested, I hope our bail bond soothes things over."

Lutherus was too busy waffling down the vast food laid out in the hall to even contemplate being angry. "Mmmmm...fink muffin off itft!" He replied, with a mouthful of beef, potato and wine.

Farkas smiled. "Skjor has more work lined up for you. Speaking of which, there he is. Skjor!" Called Farkas, as Skjor approached. Lutherus gulped down the rest of the food in his mouth, and went to meet Skjor, now moving around to him.

"Sit, lad." Remarked Skjor. The three sat together, discussing the next errand they wanted Lutherus to embark on. "You'll be going with Farkas, and our new recruit to Dustman's Cairn." Instructed Skjor.

"But, what am I looking for at this 'Dustman's Cairn?'" Questioned Lutherus.

"A fragment of Wuuthrad. One of the Companions most prized artefacts."

    "Wuuthrad?"

"Yes, Wuuthrad. Speak to Farkas when you're ready."

"Very well." Said Lutherus, as he made about his final preparations before leaving. He collected Farkas, 20 minutes later out in the courtyard.

"I certainly hope you're ready for this, new blood." Remarked Farkas.

"I have everything we need. Let's get going. Where is this new recruit?"

"By the city gates leading out of Whiterun. You're going to pick him up." Lutherus left the comfort of Jorrvaskr and made way to the city gates. The newly recruited Companion however, was nowhere to be seen. Lutherus thought he may of been early to the rendezvous, so he hung about for a bit. He propped himself up against a wall that surrounded the city, waiting for this new recruit. He then felt a small pebble hit the back of his head. Annoyed, Lutherus rose and turned to face the thrower.

"Hello, Lutherus." Came the voice from the mysterious figure. It took a moment for it to register with Lutherus, as to who it was.

    "F-Faendal?" He asked.
