I'm often asked where the Ancients first arrived in the Archipelago. The "traditional home" of the High Elves is, in fact, just the latest home for our ancient and proud race.
The farthest northern tip of Auridon is, in fact, the first place within the Summerset Isles to see the tread of the Ancients. All throughout Valenwood their ruins and influence can be seen.
But we can all agree: it is here in the Isles that the fleeing Ayleids of the heartland finally found a home.

The Aldmer were a people far smaller in numbers, there weren't any "masses" to begin with. They couldn't be more than a few thousands while the population of Alinor is far probably millions. Also the Aldmer still had the direct guidance of the Aedra which the later generations didn't have. They had to set some concrete lines that couldn't be crossed so that the masses won't be misled by all kinds of Daedra worshippers. Especially since there already were a few precedents. less

Like, a society will change but the Altmer remain resistant to any form of change since the one they brought about. The discussion regarding Aldmer society breaks down here really due to lack of info. I made a supposition regarding their ideology, backed by nothing whatsoever, so to answer your returned supposition seems a disservice to the subject as we stray into myth - direct guidance from the Aedra? There are lots of places to go with that, one possibility is that these Aedra were mortals like them at the time, only later becoming Aedra = Ancestors. Don't be so hard on the Daedra, though. Meridia isn't so bad less

Faith must help people be better, not otherwise.

Also it was the only major change while there may also be other lesser changes of which we might not know. After all, we don't have much details on that beyond the general data.
